World Bioproduct Day Celebrated Globally on July 7

On July 7, 2025, the world celebrated World Bioproduct Day, an event dedicated to spreading awareness about sustainable bioproducts. First observed in 2021, the day highlights eco-friendly innovations that support a greener future and climate action. Various countries, including India, took part in sharing progress, achievements, and new goals in the bioeconomy sector.

What Are Bioproducts and Why They Matter

Bioproducts are made from renewable resources like plants, algae, and waste materials. Unlike regular products made from fossil fuels, bioproducts are environment-friendly and help reduce pollution. They are a big part of the circular economy, where things are reused and recycled. There are two main types of bioproducts:

  • Conventional Bioproducts: Such as paper, wood, and building materials.
  • Emerging Bioproducts: New products under development, like biofuels, bioplastics, bioenergy, and bio-based adhesives.

These products not only cut down greenhouse gas emissions but also lead to innovations in areas like packaging, energy, and transport.

India’s Growing Role in the Bioproduct Sector

India is fast becoming a leader in the bioeconomy. Its biotechnology sector is expected to cross $130 billion by 2024. India plays a major role in,

  • Biopharmaceuticals: Supplying low-cost drugs and vaccines globally, and leading in biosimilars.
  • Bio Agriculture: With over 55% land used for farming, India grows Bt Cotton and is among the top five in organic farming land. The Bio Agri sector is likely to reach $20 billion by 2025.
  • Bio Industrial: Using biotechnology to improve manufacturing and waste disposal.
  • Bio IT & Services: India offers services in research, clinical trials, and bioinformatics.

This growth shows India’s strong commitment to sustainable development and eco-friendly practices.

Global Push for Sustainable Bioproducts

The World Bioeconomy Forum recently introduced a new digital tool: worldbiorefineries.com. This site shows forest-based biorefineries and innovative bioproducts in Europe. Its first product, the Biorefinery Map™, helps users explore different sustainable products and facilities. The platform aims to encourage green innovation and support eco-friendly industries worldwide.
