World Cotton Day 2023, History, Theme and Significance

World Cotton Day, observed on October 7 each year, emphasises cotton’s importance in generating jobs and supporting economies, especially in less developed countries. The day’s celebrations promote fair trade and help developing nations engage in all aspects of the cotton industry to improve their economies. Cotton is a valuable crop grown in many countries around the world and traded internationally.  The initiative of World Cotton Day was born in 2019, when four cotton producers in sub-Saharan Africa– Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali, known as the Cotton Four -proposed the World Trade Organization a World Cotton Day celebration on October 7. During 2 consecutive years, the date offered an opportunity to share knowledge and showcase cotton-related activities.

History of World Cotton Day:

The first World Cotton Day was proposed on October 7, 2019, and was officially approved by the WTO.
Collaborations with organizations such as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the International Cotton Advisory Committee, and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) helped bring this initiative to life.
