India Unveils First Air Taxi Prototype: How eVTOL Aircraft Work, Features, Benefits and Challenges

India has taken a significant step towards the future of urban transportation with the blessing of its very first electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft prototype by The ePlane Company, an IIT Madras-incubated startup. This prototype showcases India’s entry into the phenomenon of air mobility, it is a fast-growing sector in the world which is expected to change the way traveling works in the near future, including reducing traffic jams and travel time with the help of electric air taxi services.

The company will focus on air ambulance services first and expand to passenger transportation next, with plans to start commercial operations by 2028.

What is eVTOL?

The Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) is an electric-powered flying vehicle that takes off and lands vertically, similar to a helicopter but travels horizontally like a regular airplane.

eVTOLs are different from conventional airplanes because they do not need long runways. eVTOLs use many electric propellers and sophisticated flight control systems. They land and take off from a small area referred to as vertiport.

The technology is seen as an important part of the Advanced Air Mobility technology that aims to improve transportation in urban areas by making it safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly.

How does eVTOL technology work?

The eVTOL uses a combination of helicopter-like vertical lifting ability and fixed-wing airplane-like flying efficiency.

How it works,

  • Takes off vertically by using several electric propellers.
  • Changes to horizontal flying after reaching altitude.
  • Lands vertically at the destination.
  • Relies on rechargeable batteries instead of aviation fuel.

Most of the eVTOL prototypes employ distributed electric propulsion, which means several electric motors perform both lift and thrust. This ensures safety because even if one motor is not operational, the aircraft can still fly.

eVTOL versus Helicopter

Despite the fact that both vertical takeoff machines are able to take off and land vertically as the name indicates, they possess notable differences.

Characteristic eVTOL Helicopter
Source of power Electric batteries Aviation fuel
Means of propulsion Multiple electric motors Large rotor
Level of noise Significantly quieter Considerably noisy
Emissions Zero emissions Carbon
Maintenance costs Low maintenance High maintenance
Operational costs Expected to be low Relatively high

India’s First eVTOL Prototype

This prototype was created by The ePlane Company which is an IIT Madras-based new company.

Key Points

  • The first eVTOL prototype produced in India
  • The aircraft was created for shorter journeys within cities
  • The commercial use of the prototype is expected in 2028
  • The first application will be in air ambulances
  • Transport to and from airports, and air taxi transports are meant for the future

The company claims that the aircraft is able to significantly decrease the amount of time spent travelling within urban areas by flying above the road traffic.

Why Start with Air Ambulances?

According to companies worldwide, transporting medical patients should be first priority because,

  • Emergency cases call for quick transport.
  • Hospitals operate at fixed sites.
  • The management of medical transport is easier than running a taxi service in the city.
  • Average income from transporting a medical patient is higher than from a passenger.

In February 2025, the International Critical Air Transfer Team (ICATT) signed a contract with the ePlane Company for the purchase of 788 eVTOL air ambulances, which proves the demand for the technology.

Challenges to the Commercial Launch

In spite of the swift strides made, there still exist many obstacles before we can see the rise of air taxis.

1. Certification of Aircraft

All eVTOLs must have an airworthiness certification from aviation authorities before commercial operation begins.

2. Construction of Infrastructure

Cities must construct vertiports that are capable of,

  • Take off and landing
  • Charging of batteries
  • Boarding passengers
  • Maintenance of aircraft

3. Battery Technology

Batteries are heavy which extensively affect,

  • Flight range
  • Carrying capacity of passengers

4. Regulatory Framework

Governments must set regulations for the,

  • Licensing pilots
  • Regulation of air traffic
  • Safety requirements
  • Maintenance operations
  • Commercial operations

International harmonization of regulations will be important for widespread use of air taxis.

Worldwide Advancement in eVTOL Technology

Numerous international companies are spearheading the progress of electric air taxis.

The chief companies are,

  • Joby Aviation (USA)
  • Archer Aviation (USA)
  • EHang (China)
  • Volocopter (Germany)
  • Lilium (Germany)
  • Airbus (Europe)

EHang from China was the first organization to get the type certificate for passenger-carrying eVTOL craft, while American companies are continuing pilot testing and certification process.

Position of India in the Global Competition

India has entered the eVTOL market after many other competitors, but it is swiftly establishing its own ecosystem.

The chief companies in India include,

  • The ePlane Company
  • Sarla Aviation

The government’s strong emphasis on advanced aviation technologies is likely to promote innovations, infrastructure development and future business activities.

Why Are the Commonwealth Games 2026 Limited to 10 Sports?

After the initial host, Victoria (Australia), pulled out of the hosting in 2023 owing to soaring costs of around A$6 to A$7 billion, the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games have seen a reduction in their size.

Glasgow has forced the realization of the Games using an economical structure with already available infrastructure rather than developing new infrastructure. This resulted in,

  • A smaller program in sports with the count of sports reduced from 19 (Birmingham 2022) to just 10.
  • The competition will happen in just four venues.
  • Athletics and swimming remain compulsory sports by regulation of Commonwealth Sports.
  • Other sports were hailed as per their venue placements, athlete participation, cost effectiveness, and commercial viability.

Even with such an abridged sports program, Glasgow 2026 will distribute 215 gold medals and host the largest ever inclusive para sports program with six para sports participating this time around. The Glasgow 2026 organizers are optimistic that this economic model would further help in conducting future Commonwealth Games at lesser costs and increase their appeal as a host for future cities.

Takeda’s QDENGA Becomes India’s First Approved Dengue Vaccine

India has granted authorization for its first dengue vaccine to be used, which indicates a pivotal moment in its battle against one of the its most prevalent mosquito-borne ailments. The Drug Controller General of India has given its assent to QDENGA by Takeda Biopharmaceuticals, which can defend people from all four dengue virus strains.

This approval gives the QDENGA the eligibility to be given to people aged between 4-60 years irrespective of the fact that are already infected with future dengue virus strains or not. Unlike some older dengue vaccines, QDENGA does not have any requirement regarding pre-vaccination screening thus providing easier application in mode of immunization.

India Granted First Vaccine for Dengue

The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has approved QDENGA, the first vaccine against dengue in the country. Up until now, the following techniques have mostly been used for controlling dengue in India,

  • Mosquito control methods
  • Public education
  • Disease surveillance
  • Treatment of the infection

As there is no specific antiviral for dengue, the vaccine will be a major tool for prevention of the disease along with the already existing preventive measures.

What exactly is QDENGA?

QDENGA is a live attenuated vaccine developed by a Japanese pharmaceutical company, Takeda.

Main characteristics of the vaccine

  • The vaccine is used to protect from all existing types (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4) of dengue virus.
  • It is used for the people from ages of 4 to 60.
  • People do not need to be tested before being vaccinated.
  • There are two doses of the vaccine which have to be taken

Why is the Approval Important?

India continues to face a mounting dengue threat.

Important Information

  • The number of reported dengue cases in this country has risen by more than 10 times in 20 years.
  • In 2025, the number of confirmed cases reached over 113,000.
  • Experts suggest that the numbers may be much higher than this officially reported figure every year.

The approval has given birth to an additional preventive method which combines with insecticide measures.

Clinical Trials Summary

The approval is based on Takeda’s global wide clinical trial program of Takeda which was conducted in more than 28000 patients around the world including 19 different Phase I, II, and III clinical trials and phase III study done in India.

TIDES Phase III Trial Results

The international TIDES trial conducted in 8 countries with more than 20000 subjects yielded the following results,

  • 80.2% efficacy against laboratory-confirmed dengue infection was observed one year after the second dose
  • 90.4% efficiency of dengue hospitalization prevention was observed 18 months after the second dose
  • 84.1% protection against hospitalization for a period of 4.5 years
  • Safety and efficacy were observed up to 7 years of follow up

WHO Endorsement

The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the use of QDENGA in countries where there is dengue virus transmission without the need for screening prior to vaccination.

The vaccine has been prequalified by the WHO enabling international organizations like UNICEF to procure it.

Supreme Court Asks Centre to Frame Uniform Post-Retirement Norms for High Court Judges

The Supreme Court has instructed the Central Government to form a committee within two weeks to recommend a uniform post-retirement benefit scheme for retired Chief Justices and High Court judges in India. The order was issued while hearing a petition regarding differing levels of post-retirement benefits given to retired judges of High Courts in different states. The Court underscored the necessity of having a uniform policy to ensure equality, dignity, and adequate post-retirement benefits that are not affected by the place of service.

What did the Supreme Court to render the Judgement?

The case was heard by a Supreme Court bench lead by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice V. Mohan, and Justice Joymalya Bagchi when a petition regarding security measures and other benefits was filed for retired judges of High Courts.

The bench of the court noted that various states have differences in rendering assistance to retired judges and thus, create unequal treatment which is otherwise constitutionally equal.

The bench has deemed that such inconsistencies call for a single policy applicable all over the country.

Committee to be Formed Within 14 Days

In compliance with the Supreme Court’s direction, a committee is to be formed by the Central Government within two weeks.

The committee’s job will be to,

  • Create consistent guidelines for post-retirement benefits.
  • Assess the methods of providing financial aid to states.
  • Propose a uniform policy for India.

The Supreme Court insisted that the committee give all its suggestions to the Central Government and the Supreme Court within three months after it is formed.

Which Benefits Have Been Discussed Regarding Post-Retirement?

The Bench noted during the hearing that retired High Court judges receive different degrees of assistance based on the state in which they served.

The facilities under consideration include the following the,

  • Security arrangement.
  • Drivers.
  • Household help.
  • Telecommunication facilities.
  • Medical reimbursement.
  • Government accommodation.

It was emphasized that such perks should not differ from state to state.

Supreme Court Raises Questions Regarding Assistance Provided

The Court has raised doubts as to whether the financial aid being provided by a few states can suffice for the security and transport requirements.

Chief Justice Surya Kant specifically asked if the amount of ₹45,000 to ₹50,000 can effectively cover the costs of hiring a security guard and a driver.

The Court noted that that kind of assistance seems inadequate considering the security responsibilities of retired judges.

Centre Agrees to Form Committee

While appearing on behalf of the Union Government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said before the Court that the Centre does not have any objection against forming the committee.

He noted that the issue is important enough to be taken up and promised the Bench that necessary action would be taken.

The Court noted the willingness of the Centre before giving the formal directions.

Mukhyamantri Swasth Bastar Abhiyan Improves Maternal and Child Healthcare in Sukma

The Mukhyamantri Swasth Bastar Abhiyan (Chief Minister’s Health Bastar Mission) is showing satisfactory results as far as improvement in the health status, especially maternal and child health, is concerned in the state of the Chhattisgarh. In Sukma district, which is one of the most backward and Naxal-affected districts, the program has seen a miraculous reduction in maternal mortality and infant mortality, as well as increase in institutional deliveries to nearly 98.6 percent. The program is ensuring successful maternal and child health services which are attributed to early registration of pregnant ladies, regular ante-natal care services, and doorstep health services.

What is the Mukhyamantri Swasth Bastar Abhiyan?

The Mukhyamantri Swasth Bastar Abhiyan is a prominent program developed by the Government of Chhattisgarh to improve the healthcare facilities in the remote districts of the Bastar region.

The initiative was initiated by Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai on 14 April 2026 in Sukma. The main objective of the initiative is to deliver proper healthcare services to the rural areas that have not had enough access to hospitals due to geographical difficulties and Left Wing Extremism activities.

This program focuses on preventive healthcare services, child health care, disease detection, and appropriate treatment.

Notable Progress in Maternal and Child Healthcare

The project has led to significant advancements in maternal and child healthcare status in Sukma district.

As per the officials of the district,

  • Declining rates of Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR).
  • Reduced rates of Infant Mortality Rate (IMR).
  • Higher rates of institutional deliveries (98.6%).
  • Improved tracking of pregnant women and high-risk pregnancies.

These results indicate the effectiveness of continuous healthcare delivery and improved accessibility of institutional health services.

Institutional Deliveries Rise to 98.6%

The rise in institutional deliveries can be credited as one of the most important achievements of the program.

Concerned officials informed that the institutional deliveries have gone up from about 96-97% to 98.6%, which indicates an increase in public faith in government health centers.

The public awareness campaigns, availability of ambulances, and improving the maternity health services have made people go for institutional deliveries.

Detecting Early and Managing Pregnant Women

One of the key goals of the campaign is to make sure that every pregnant woman gets proper medical attention on time.

Health teams are in charge of the,

  • Early registering of pregnancies.
  • Consistent antenatal visits.
  • Giving vaccination.
  • Checking for risk in pregnancy.
  • Continuous monitoring through pregnancy.

As per Sukma Collector Amit Kumar, every pregnant woman in the area is now under the monitoring system of the health department, thus securing proper medical supervision during the pregnancy.

Healthcare in Hard-to-Reach Locations

This initiative expanded healthcare coverage in inaccessible regions.

Healthcare professionals are reaching out to villagers in,

  • Dense forests.
  • Hilly regions.
  • Inland areas of tribal communities.

Even when there are logistical problems, medical workers are performing house-to-house health check-ups, allowing them to detect less privileged persons and make sure that they are treated timely.

Index of Core Industries Growth Rises 5% in June 2026 Under Revised 2022-23 Base Year Series

India’s Index of Core Industries (ICI) witnessed a 5% growth year-on-year in June 2026 as per the provisional estimates released by the Office of Economic Advisor (OEA) under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). In addition to this latest numbers, the government has also announced a new ICI series using 2022-23 as the base year in place of base year 2011-12. The new series is based on the several methodological improvements, specially in incorporating Iron Ore as part of the core industries.

What is the Index of Core Industries (ICI)?

The Index of Core Industries (ICI) is a monthly survey that measures the production performance of the major Indian industries.

These industries are regarded as the backbone of the economy since they provide essential inputs for manufacturing, infrastructure, construction, and other economic activities.

The ICI also acts as an indicator for the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) and the industrial growth of the economy.

With the revision series now in place, the total number of core industries has increased from eight to nine.

Government Revises the Base Year for ICI

The Office of the Economic Adviser has decided to revise the base year of ICI from 2011-12 to 2022-23 to reflect better the present structure of India’s industrial economy.

The base year is changed, which is important in the reflection of changes in production processes, development of technologies and importance of different industries at different times.

The series is available retrospectively from April 2023, which will help the analysts to evaluate the previous trends with the updated methodology.

The Revised Index of Core Industries: Key Adjustments

There are numerous key methodological refinements within the new ICI series.

Inclusion of Iron Ore in the List of Core Industries

  • Inclusion of Iron Ore as the new ninth core industry is a significant revision.
  • The Government mentions that inclusion of Iron Ore is based on its wide application in industrial production as well as its growing significance for the economy of India.

Change in Steel Index Methodology

  • In the new methodology, the Steel Index is calculated using gross production data, which means that its methodology is now consistent with the updated Index of Industrial Production.
  • Before the change, net production data was used.

Change in Coal Categories

  • The Coal category has also gone through modifications.
  • At this point only Raw Coal is included in the coal category because the coal-middling and washed coal are excluded in order to avoid double counting, as both are derived from raw coal.

Updated Industry Weights

  • Weights of various core industries now correspond with the new IIP (2022-23) weights and have been rationally altered to reach the total of 100.

Introduction of Linking Factor

  • The Economic Adviser’s Office has established a linking factor of 1.47 between two datasets.

June 2026: The Change in Core Industries Increased by 5%

The provisional data shows an increase of 5% in the Index of Core Industries on a year-to-year basis in June 2026. The increase is high compared to that of May 2026 during which the economy grew at 3.2%

The performance is better because production increased in key sectors such as Electricity, Iron Ore, Cement, Coal, and Steel.

The increase in growth in Core Industries signifies the strength of India’s industrial sector despite the challenges which some of the sectors face.

Sector-wise performance in June 2026

Best performers among the sectors

Iron Ore is known to be the leading industry in terms of growth for June as the industry achieved a remarkable growth rate of 43.9% annually.
Some other significant contributors are as follows:

  • Electricity: 9.8%
  • Cement: 9.8%
  • Steel: 4.6%
  • Coal: 1.4%

It was noted by the government that Iron Ore and Electricity are the biggest contributors to the growth of the core sector.

Sectors showing negative growth

Four sectors showed contraction in performance on YoY basis in June,

  • Natural Gas
  • Crude Oil
  • Refinery Products
  • Fertilizers

The loss made in these sectors has partially compensated for the remarkable growth witnessed by the other sectors.

Increased Expansion in the First Quarter

The aggregate rise in the Index of Core Industries for the April-June 2026 period is 3.6%, as calculated against the 1% during the same quarter of the previous fiscal year.

This improvement indicates strong momentum in industry during the first quarter of this fiscal year, pointing to increasing activity in many industries connected with infrastructure.
