India broke its long drought of 44 years to win the Asian Games women’s hockey gold medal. The country’s last and sole gold medal in this competition came in 1982.

Lalremsiami scored the match-winning goal in the 10th minute. Goalkeeper Savita played a critical part by saving a penalty stroke for India as the team held its slim lead till the final whistle.

This helped India claim its second Asian Games gold medal in women’s hockey.

Women’s hockey at the 2026 Asian Games acted as one of the qualification routes to Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Sooryavanshi made his IPL debut in 2025 when he was 14. In that year, he scored a century in just 35 balls against Gujarat Titans, making him the youngest man to score a century in T20 format of cricket and the fastest IPL century scorer by an Indian batsman till date.

Gujarat Uniform Civil Code Bill 2026 Gets President’s Assent

Honorable President of India, Droupadi Murmu has given the assent to the Gujarat Uniform Civil Code Bill 2026 on 17th of September 2026, as per the gazette issued by the Gujarat government on 1st of October. This law was passed by the Gujarat Assembly following intense discussion in March. This bill laid down a common legal framework regarding the certain civil issues, including marriage, divorce, succession, adoption, and live-in relationship.

What Does the Gujarat UCC Law Include?

This law lays down certain common provisions relating to specified personal civil issues, irrespective of the personal law framework that is applicable to these personal laws.

It includes the following key aspects,

  • Marriage
  • Divorce
  • Succession & Inheritance
  • Adoption
  • Live-in Relationships
  • Other civil relationship-related matters

This law is largely based on the precedent set up by Uttarakhand, which is the first state in modern India to implement such a UCC law. Gujarat follows Uttarakhand in being the second state to pass such legislation.

Regulation of Live-in Relationships Under the Gujarat UCC

It is worthy to note that one of the aspects of the legislation of Gujarat is the regulation of live-in relationships. In this regard, the legislation of Gujarat offers a legal basis for such relationships and also deals with the rights of the children who are born through live-in relationships.

As indicated by reporting on the legislation that has been adopted, children born from live-in relationships are recognized in the law and thus have certain legal rights. Furthermore, there are provisions related to the registration of live-in relationships.

Changes Related to Marriage, Divorce and Succession

UCC includes common provisions related to marriage and divorce and also changes rules related to succession and inheritance.

The succession system provides certain shares to spouses, children, and parents in case of death of a person without any will. These groups are covered under the Code’s succession system and not only the personal law system.

Moreover, the legislation also includes provisions regarding marriage requirements and divorce procedures. Thus, there is a common statutory system regarding those issues which fall under the Code.

Whom Does the Gujarat UCC Exclude?

The law does not cover members of Scheduled Tribes.

Also, the individuals or groups whose rights are protected under Part XXI of the Constitution of India are excluded from the UCC according to the legislation.

This provision is very significant as part XXI of the Constitution includes provisions related to temporary, transitional and special provisions of certain states and regions.

From Committee Report to Legislation

In February 2025, the Government of Gujarat set up an expert five-member committee to assess the need for and enactment of the Uniform Civil Code in the state. Justice Ranjana Desai, retired the Supreme Court judge, was appointed the Chairperson of the committee.

The other members of the committee were retired IAS officer, C.L. Meena; advocate, R.C. Kodekar; former Vice-Chancellor of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Dakshesh Thakar and social activist, Geetaben Shroff. The committee submitted its report and bill to the state government in March 2026.

Subsequently, the Gujarat Assembly enacted the UCC Bill on 24 March 2026 after a debate that lasted nearly eight hours.

Uniform Civil Code and the Constitutional Provisions

The concept of Uniform Civil Code is linked to Article 44 of the Constitution of India.

Article 44 is stated in Part IV – Directive Principles of State Policy and says that the state will work to implement a uniform civil code for all citizens of India.

The Directive Principles are covered in Articles 36 to 51. These principles are fundamental to the governance of the nation, but according to Article 37, these are not enforceable through any court.

The constitutional provisions for Uniform Civil Code are thus located in the Directive Principles of State Policy and not in the Fundamental Rights section.

Implementation Status of Gujarat UCC

Presidential assent, on its own, does not ensure that all provisions become operative straightaway.

Commencement will be decided by the government of Gujarat using the prescribed procedure for issuing notifications. Up to 3 October 2026, the law had been assented to and published in the extraordinary Gazette, but the state government had not decided the date for implementation yet.

It is necessary to make this distinction when talking about the current status of the law.

The 23-year-old golfer from Mysuru completed the four-day women’s individual event with a score of 265 (-15), winning by one shot from Singaporean Shannon Tan and Chinese Yin Ruoning, both of whom scored 266 (-14). Urs posted an even par 70 in the last day of the tournament following a triple bogey at the third hole.

How Pranavi Urs Claimed the Gold Medal

Urs started her final round with three strokes lead, having scored 4-under 66 in the third round. She however made a triple bogey at the par-4 third hole, thus erasing her lead and giving the pursuing golfers some hope.

Pranavi Urs came back strongly with three birdies on the 6th, 10th, and 13th holes, maintaining par on the rest of the holes. She posted an even-par 70 to finish the round, taking her total to 15-under 265.

Entering the last hole, Urs had a lead of one stroke. On her wayward tee shot, she followed with a perfect second shot that got her on the green where she sank two putts to post a par. This earned her the gold medal by a stroke.

India Secures Women’s Golf Team Silver

India bagged the team silver for women’s golf as well, with Pranavi Urs competing as part of the trio which also includes Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar.

The three Indians scored 14-under 546 while China clinched team gold with their score of 22-under 538. In the team event, the best two scores from each nation’s golfers in each round are used. Ashok’s score in the final round was 67 while Diksha Dagar’s score was 77.

Path Taken by Kumkum Mohod to Reach the Asian Games Final

In the quarterfinals, Mohod beat the defending World and Olympic champion, Kang Chaeyoung of South Korea, 6-4. She went on to beat Zhu Jingyi of China, the 2025 World Championships silver medallist, 6-2 in the semi-finals.

By winning the semi-final, Mohod became the first Indian female to qualify for an individual recurve final at the Asian Games. Qualification for the semi-finals gave India a women’s recurve quota spot for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Three-Medal Asian Games by Kumkum Mohod

The individual gold medal capped her excellent three-medal effort for Mohod.

Mohod was a member of the Indian women’s recurve team which beat South Korea 5-3 in the finals on October 2. In conjunction with Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma, she assisted in helping India bag its first Asian Games gold in the women’s recurve team category.

Record Breaking Gold for India in Women’s Recurve Archery Team

In the women’s recurve team final, Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and Kumkum Mohod beat South Korea 5-3 to win India’s first ever gold in the event at the Asian Games.

What made this win particularly special is the fact that South Korea has traditionally been the ruling force in Asian archery. This historic win broke their hegemony in the women’s recurve team event at the Asian Games.

India also bagged a silver medal in the mixed recurve team event, in which Dhiraj Bommadevara and Kumkum Mohod participated, and also a silver in the men’s recurve team event, in which Dhiraj was paired with Yashdeep Bhoge and Neeraj Chauhan.

Sujeet Kalkal Returns to Win Wrestling Gold

Wrestler Sujeet Kalkal won the men’s freestyle 65kg gold by staging a dramatic comeback against Abdulmazhid Kudiev of Tajikistan.

Sujeet was 2-9 down at one stage in the final but came back strongly and scored eight straight points to clinch a 10-9 win. This was India’s first ever wrestling gold since Bajrang Punia’s 2018 triumph.

India’s Success in Boxing

India clinched three gold medals in boxing on Day 14.

In the women’s 75kg event, Lovlina Borgohain defeated Bao Ziyi of China in the final by a scoreline of 5-0. She became only the second female boxer from India to bag a gold medal at the Asian Games after Mary Kom in 2014.

In the women’s 65kg category, Parveen Hooda defeated Chen Nien-chin of Chinese Taipei in the final with a score of 3-2. She became the third female boxer from India to win a gold medal at the Asian Games after Mary Kom and Lovlina.

Ankush Panghal defeated Kim Minseong of South Korea 4-0 in the men’s 80kg event. He became the first male boxer from India since Amit Panghal in 2018 to clinch an Asian Games gold.

Women’s Hockey Ends 44-Year Wait for Gold

The highlight of Day 14 was the women’s hockey team event.

India defeated the defending champions China by 1-0 scoreline to lift its first gold medal in women’s hockey at the Asian Games since 1982. Lalremsiami scored the crucial goal in the 10th minute, while Savita Punia made an important penalty stroke save to defend India’s slim lead.

It also ensured automatic qualification of India’s women’s hockey team for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Other Medal-Winning Teams of Day 14

India bagged two bronze medals in the other disciplines.

Nethra Kumanan won the bronze medal in the women’s dinghy sailing discipline, while the India men’s quadrants in sepaktakraw lost their semifinal to hosts Japan to settle for a bronze medal finish.

India Wins Asian Games 2026 Women’s Hockey Gold After 44 Years

India won the Asian Games women’s hockey gold medal after a 44-year gap as they beat China 1-0 in the final match held on October 2, 2026. The winner of the gold was Lalremsiami who scored in the 10th minute with her reverse-stick shot, while India’s defenders managed to defend against China’s onslaught. The goalkeeper Savita Punia played well as she saved a penalty stroke for India to defend the lead. India won the women’s hockey gold after 44 years, since 1982 and also booked a spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Goal by Lalremsiami for India

The match started after a delay of one hour since the team buses were caught in traffic before reaching the ground. Once the game started, China tried to take an aggressive start but India defended well.

India scored the only goal in the 10th minute. Sakshi Rana put in a pass inside the circle for Lalremsiami who then scored with his reverse-stick shot.

This goal was decisive for India as they went on to win with the scoreline of 1-0.

India Survives Chinese Pressure

China kept up the pressure during the course of the game, especially in the second and third quarters. However, the Chinese team attempted to attack using flanks and gained penalty corners; however, they couldn’t find ways to score from the created chances.

India was constantly putting pressure on the attacking plays of the Chinese team. The Indian players were giving their body for the cause to defend the slim lead of their team with a 1-0 scoreline.

In this regard, it is possible to say that the success of India was not only the result of an early goal of Lalremsiami.

Save Made by India’s Goalkeeper Savita Punia

The most decisive moment of the match took place in the 24th minute when the Chinese team was awarded a penalty stroke due to an obstruction made by Lalremsiami.
