  • Indus
  • Saraswati
  • Along with the five rivers we know today

Greek Name – Pentapotamia

When Alexander the Great came to India in 326 BCE, the Greeks gave this land a new name – Pentapotamia. 

This word means “Land of Five Rivers” in the Greek language. It clearly shows that even forgiveness noticed the importance of rivers in this region.

The name Punjab comes from the Persian language:

  • Panj: Five
  • Ab: Water

So, Punjab means “Land of Five Waters (Rivers).”

Later, the British took control of the region in 1849 and kept the name Punjab Province.
