Balendra Shah Sworn In As Nepal’s Youngest PM After Historic ELection Mandate

Balendra Shah who is popularly known as ‘Balen’ was sworn as the country’s 47th Prime Minister on March 27, 2026. The 35 year old leader from the Rastriya Swatantra Party took oath at the President’s Office in Sheetal Niwas.  His appointment was made by President Ram Chandra Paudel under constitutional provisions and its shows chaneg in the Nepal’s political outlook.

His victory comes in the backdrop of massive Gen-Z led protests that erupted in 2025.

Landslide Victory Signals Collapse of Traditional Parties

The general elections held on March 5 2026 and it delivered a historic mandate.

The Rastriya Swatantra Party secured 182 out of 275 seats in the House of Representative and they achieved the clear majority.

On the other side the traditional parties faced a major setback

  • Nepali Congress: 38 seats
  • CPN-UML: 25 seats

Balen himself has defeated veteran leader K P Sharma Oli in Jhapa which is the stronghold of established political forces.
