Indonesia has begun to implement the new regulation which is banning children under 16 years for accessing major social media platforms. The ban was approved earlier in the Month of March 2026. The policy is aims to protect the nearly 70 million children from several risks like cyberbullying, online scams and harmful content which they consume. Various platforms like as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook functioning are affected.

As Indonesia has become the first Southeast Asian country to impose this type of strict restrictions on children’s social media access.
The regulation is targeting the platforms which are considered as the high-risk for young ones due to exposure to the,
- Harmful or explicit content
- Cyberbullying and various types of scams
- Digital addiction to the children
The government has also directed all the platforms which are operating in the country and they have to comply immediately with the planned implemnetation.

Key difficulties which include the ensuring platforms identify and deactivate under-16 accounts. Also the monitoring the compliance across the global tech companies and to preventing misuse of VPNs or fake age verification.
Also the government has acknowledged that enforcement will not be easy and smooth but has they have emphasized that child safety is their topmost priority.
