Ahmedabad based Kankaria Coaching Depot has emerged as the ‘water neutral’ railway depot which has redefining how the traditional railway operations can align with environmental goals. As this depot have saving nearly 1.60 lakh litres of water daily and the depot has demonstrated how the innovation and eco-friendly practices which can significantly reduce the resource consumption.
Kankaria Depot Achieves Water Neutral Status
The Kankaria Coaching Depot has successfully achieved the water neutrality it means that it treats and reuses as much water as it consumes.
This milestone has been made possible via the advanced wastewater management systems that minimize reliance on freshwater sources.
The depot’s daily water savings of 1.60 lakh litres are equivalent to more than 300 household water tanks and making it significant contribution to urban water conservation.
Over the year this translates to approximately the 5.84 crore litres of water have saved which showcase the large-scale impact of the initiative.
Phytoremediation The Nature-Based Water Treatment
The main central part of this transformation lies the innovative wastewater treatment method which is known as Phytoremediation.
This eco-friendly technique uses the plants to naturally filter and purify the contaminated water.
In the depot,
- The wastewater generated from activities such as coach washing and maintenance is not discarded but it is treated through the carefully designed the natural system where the plants absorb pollutants and improve water quality.
- This process reduces the environmental harm while ensuring the efficient reuse of water.
Multi-Stage Scientific Treatment Process
The water treatment system at Kankaria Coaching Depot follows the multi-stage purification process which combines the natural and technological methods for optimistic results.
Initially the wastewater passes through the wetland-based systems where plants help to remove impurities.
This is followed by the advanced filtration technique which include the sand and carbon filtration which further enhance the water clarity and quality.
In the final stage UV disinfection will ensures that the treated water is safe for the reuse in railway operations.
This integrated approach have ensures that the water meets the environmental safety standards while remaining suitable for the repeate use.
Environmental and Economic Benefits
The initiative offers the dual advantages by promoting both environmental sustainability and cost efficiency.
By reducing the dependence on freshwater sources this depot significantly lowers the water consumption costs.
Reducing wastewater discharge into the environment and conserving natural water resources will promote the eco-friendly industrial practices.
The system also aligns with the environmental regulations and also ensures the compliance with sustainability standards.
