AI Centres of Excellence to Boost Research, Innovation, and Economy

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced the establishment of three Artificial Intelligence Centres of Excellence (AI-COEs) focused on health, agriculture, and sustainable cities. These centres, located at AIIMS Delhi, IIT Ropar, and IIT Kanpur, will promote research, innovation, and economic development while addressing public welfare. Led by top educational institutions, industry partners, and startups, the centres aim to provide interdisciplinary research and scalable solutions. This initiative aligns with the “Make AI in India, Make AI work for India” vision from the 2023-24 Budget.

Key Centres and Focus Areas

AIIMS Delhi (Health): In collaboration with IIT Delhi, this centre will focus on advancements in healthcare through AI.

IIT Ropar (Agriculture): The centre will target AI-driven agricultural solutions.

IIT Kanpur (Sustainable Cities): This centre will focus on AI applications for urban development and sustainability.

Long-Term Vision

Mr. Pradhan emphasized that in 10 years, these AI-COEs will position India as a global leader in providing AI-driven solutions, reinforcing the country’s strategic focus on AI development.

AI Optimism

Optimists argue AI will boost productivity, innovation, and economic growth, with projections adding $1.2 to $3.8 trillion to the US economy annually. AI could make workers more efficient, especially in service industries, and reduce costs for businesses.

AI Pessimism

Pessimists foresee widespread job losses, with 80% of workers affected by automation. Income inequality may worsen, as large corporations, which have the resources to develop AI, could dominate the market, leaving smaller firms and workers behind.

AI Pragmatism

Pragmatists suggest AI will shift, rather than eliminate jobs, and foresee a gradual adoption of AI technologies due to high development costs. They argue that the pace of change will allow for public policy and industry adjustments, slowing disruption and spreading benefits more evenly.
