Asian Games 2026: India Wins Mixed 4x400m Relay Silver, Seema Kumari Takes 10,000m Bronze

India secured two medals in athletics at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya on September 24. The mixed 4x400m relay team comprising of Manu TS, M.R. Poovamma, Vishal TK and Vithya Ramraj clinched silver in 3:14.46 with an impressive performance from Vithya in the last lap. Before that, Seema Kumari won bronze in women’s 10,000m in 32:50.05 and ended India’s 16-year-long drought in the event.

India Secures Second Place in Mixed 4x400m Relay

Second place went to India in the mixed 4x400m relay final in the timing of 3:14.46. The team members included Manu TS, M.R. Poovamma, Vishal TK and Vithya Ramraj.

The team started third but got to second place due to a strong run by Vithya Ramraj. The Bahrainis took the gold in Games record timing of 3:12.87 while Vietnam secured the bronze in 3:14.54.

This also means India successfully defended the silver medal which it had won in the mixed 4x400m relay in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.

The race by the Bahrain team set a new mark in the Asian Games for this discipline. India was just ahead of Vietnam, by 0.08 seconds.

Seema Kumari Wins 10,000m Bronze

India’s athlete Seema Kumari won bronze in the women’s 10,000m race in 32:50.05. The first position secured by Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi in 32:39.18, and silver was claimed by the Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka in 32:41.54.

Seema’s bronze put an end to India’s 16-year period without a medal in women’s 10,000m at the Asian Games. Seema became the third Indian woman who won a medal in this discipline at the Asian Games. Preeja Sreedharan won gold, and Kavita Raut won silver at the 2010 games.

Seema stayed among the medalists until the end and managed to take back third position with about 1,000 meters left. This also brought India their first medal in athletics at the 2026 Asian Games.
