Assam Government Initiates ‘Gunotsav 2024’

The Assam government is gearing up for the fifth edition of ‘Gunotsav 2024,’ a comprehensive state-wide assessment aimed at evaluating the performance of approximately 40 lakh students across government schools. The initiative, slated to run from January 3 to February 8, 2024, is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of education and improving learning outcomes in the state.

Unveiling the Details

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu recently unveiled the specifics of this year’s evaluation process during a press conference held in Dibrugarh. The assessment will cover a vast network of 43,498 government schools spread across 35 districts, with a student population totaling 39,63,542.

Stakeholder Participation

‘Gunotsav’ emphasizes active participation from all stakeholders, including teachers, students, administrators, and local communities. This holistic engagement is expected to foster accountability and contribute to an overall enhancement of the quality of education in Assam.

Three Phases of Assessment

The evaluation process will unfold in three distinct phases. The first phase, spanning from January 3 to 6, will cover 12 districts. The second phase, from January 9 to 12, will involve 13 districts, and the final phase, scheduled from February 5 to 8, will comprise the remaining 10 districts. Pegu emphasized that ‘Gunotsav 2024’ serves a dual purpose: identifying learning gaps in each child and ensuring quality education with grade-specific outcomes.

Comprehensive Evaluation

The assessment will not only focus on individual student performance but also evaluate schools across various domains. These include scholastic and co-scholastic aspects, infrastructure availability and utilization, and community participation.

Deployment of External Evaluators

To facilitate the assessment process, a substantial force of 18,098 external evaluators will be deployed throughout Assam. This diverse group will include prominent figures such as the chief minister, MLAs, the chief secretary, and college teachers. These external evaluators will visit schools, bringing a multifaceted perspective to the evaluation process.

Evolution of Gunotsav

‘Gunotsav’ made its debut in 2017, and the 2024 edition marks the fifth round of this comprehensive exercise, covering all districts of Assam.
