The Assam Government has declared that the January 1, 2027, will be the deadline for all government offices in Assam to transition into a paperless e-Office system. The decision was announced by the office of the Chief Minister on September 23, 2026, and represents a significant milestone in the digital governance initiative in Assam. In the new e-Office system, all the procedures of moving files from one office to another will be done electronically.
Assam Government Declares January 1, 2027, Deadline for Paperless Offices
The office of the Chief Minister announced that the January 1 deadline would mark the next phase in Assam’s digital governance initiatives.
According to the government, all offices will be transitioning to a paperless e-Office system, which aims to ensure that public administration becomes transparent, efficient and people-friendly.
This decision is not about introducing the concept of e-Office in Assam but about expanding an existing system.
How Does e-Office Work?
The e-Office system, which has been designed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), shifts from paper-based processes to digitization in file handling.
Through the use of e-Office, government offices can,
- Receive and diarize electronic documents
- Digitally create and transfer files
- Make notes and draft
- Digitally sign official documents
- Monitor file transfers and status
- Digitally archive
e-Office is already used in Assam Secretariat
As per NIC, all 58 departments of the Assam Secretariat are using e-Office at present. Further, the process of implementation is being extended to selected directorates and Deputy Commissioners’ offices.
It must be noted that Assam started its efforts to implement the platform some years back. The state started the process of implementation in districts and created a dedicated state-level steering mechanism in 2021.
Further, the state launched e-Office District in 2026 to enable paperless administration.
What Will Be Different From January 1, 2027?
The deadline for January 1 is likely to extend the current digital structure from the Secretariat and some departments to all government departments in Assam.
Whether this will be successful will rely on consistent implementation and the digital infrastructure and capacity of departments to conduct their everyday work processes digitally.
In the case of Assam, this move will simply extend an already existing digital administration system.
