The state government of Assam has launched the applications for the its major student schemes named Nijut Moina and Nijut Babu, which provides more financial aid for students taking up studies beyond higher secondary level. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma formally launched the process of application form distribution for these schemes on August 6, 2026, in Guwahati. The aim of these programs is to motivate the students to stick to education, while Nijut Moina has an additional social motive of preventing child marriages amongst girls. The government is also extending these facilities to some other categories of students this time.
Assam launches applications for its student schemes
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma formally launched the distribution of application forms for the Nijut Moina and Nijut Babu schemes at a ceremony in Guwahati on August 6. This comes amid the state’s move to increase access to higher education and decrease the financial burden on families of students.
On this occasion, the state government also announced financial assistance for schools and students affected by the recent floods in eastern parts of Assam. The government released Rs 15.86 crore to 793 flood-affected schools in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat districts.
The financial aid will help the affected schools tackle damage caused by floods and resume their academic activities. On the occasion, the government also released Rs 4.26 crore from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) for 21,025 students in Sivasagar and Charaideo.
The funds will help the students buy the lost educational material due to recent floods.
Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Moina Scheme
The Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Moina Scheme is a program run by the Assam government with the prime focus being to aid girl students financially and motivate them to pursue education.
The scheme also carries a social purpose which is to help eliminate the evil practice of child marriage in Assam.
The chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma said it still holds top priority for his government.
This scheme was designed with the aim of providing financial aid so that girl students do not abandon their education.
Initially, the government aimed at covering 10 lakh girl students through this scheme in Assam.
As per the information provided by the chief minister, around 1.6 lakh girl students were beneficiaries of the scheme in 2024-25.
After the expansion of the scheme, it now covers around 4 lakh girl students in 2025-26.
The government aims at covering another 1 lakh girls in the scheme in the current financial year.
Eligibility Criteria of Nijut Moina Scheme Expands in 2026
The government of Assam has expanded the scope of the Nijut Moina Scheme in 2026.
The students pursuing polytechnic courses will become eligible for financial aid under the scheme.
Students of the seventh semester of integrated postgraduate courses will also be eligible for the scheme from this year.
It aims at covering the students who are pursuing varied higher education programs.
But these students need to fulfill the necessary eligibility criteria to receive and continue receiving financial aid.
As per the information provided by the chief minister, maintaining regularity, discipline and commitment to studies will be key eligibility criteria.
What Is the Nijut Babu Scheme?
The Nijut Babu Scheme is yet another financial assistance scheme for students launched by the Assam government.
The scheme is applicable for students pursuing higher secondary, undergraduate, and postgraduate studies.
Financial assistance under Nijut Babu scheme has been relatively lower compared to Nijut Moina scheme.
Sarma explained that there was a special consideration under Nijut Moina scheme, which aims at tackling child marriage. Since boys are not affected by child marriage in the same way, the financial assistance is lower in the case of Nijut Babu scheme.
Nijut Babu scheme benefited about 50,000 boys last year.
As per government plans, 70,000 more students will be brought under Nijut Babu scheme this year.
With this addition, the total number of beneficiaries under Nijut Babu scheme will rise to about 1.2 lakh.
Who Will Get Benefits Under Nijut Moina and Nijut Babu?
The two schemes offer financial assistance to deserving students pursuing different educational courses.
Main groups benefiting from the two schemes include,
- Students of higher secondary level
- Undergraduate students
- Postgraduate students
- Eligible girl students pursuing polytechnic courses
- Students of 7th semester integrated postgraduate programs
However, having enrolled in a particular course will not automatically get you financial assistance under these schemes.
Students are required to maintain regularity and discipline in attendance and have commitment towards their studies.
Financial Assistance to Be Provided Under the Nijut Moina Scheme
The government of Assam has also revealed plans to increase the financial assistance provided to students under the Nijut Moina Scheme.
The ultimate goal here is to lighten the financial load of education for the parents.
The cost of education can become a serious burden on the shoulders of families, especially as the students move to higher levels of education from school level.
Through provision of direct financial assistance, the government hopes that students would be encouraged to pursue their education without the fear of having to discontinue it because of financial problems.
