Assam Secures GI Tags for Four Traditional Products, Strengthening Cultural Heritage and Rural Economy

The state of Assam has another milestone to preserve and promoting the its rich cultural heritage with the grant of Geographical Indication (GI) tags to four traditional products. This newly recognized products includes the Karbi Anglong Handloom Products, Assam Bihu Pepa, Assam Bamboo Crafts and Deuri Handloom Products. With these additions, the number of the NABARD-supported GI-certified products in Assam has increased to 12.

Four Assam Products Receive GI Tag Recognition

The Geographical Indications Registry of India has granted the GI status to four unique products that represent the Assam’s traditional craftsmanship and cultural identity.

Karbi Anglong Handloom Products reflects the weaving traditions of the Karbi community. It is known for their distinctive designs, vibrant colors and indigenous textile techniques which passed down through generations.

Assam Bihu Pepa, it is a traditional musical instrument which made from buffalo horn and it is an integral part of Assam’s famous Bihu festival. It holds the deep cultural significance and it also symbolizes the state’s rich folk traditions.

Assam Bamboo Crafts showcase the expertise of the local artisans who creates the wide range of the products using bamboo which is one of the most abundant natural resources in the region. These crafts represents the sustainable and eco-friendly traditional practices.

Deuri Handloom Products are renowned for their intricate weaving patterns and the traditional motifs are created by the Deuri community and they preserving the centuries-old textile heritage.

What is a Geographical Indication (GI) Tag?

A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is the intellectual property right that are granted to products which possess the specific qualities, characteristics or a reputation linked to a particular geographical region.

The GI registration system in India is governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.

The registration and protection of the GI products are administered by the Geographical Indications Registry which is located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The GI tag helps to protect traditional products from unauthorized use and it ensures that only genuine producers from the designated geographical area can market the product under the its registered name.

Role of NABARD in GI Promotion

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has played the significant role in supporting the GI registration process for the Assam’s traditional products.

NABARD has been assisting the producer groups, artisans and local communities in documenting the traditional knowledge, preparing applications and securing the legal recognition for region-specific products.

The institution has also put strong focused on to improving market access and promoting the sustainable livelihood opportunities which are linked to GI-certified products.

After the latest certifications, NABARD-supported GI products in the Assam have reached a total of 12 which highlights the state’s growing recognition in the field of the traditional crafts and cultural products.
