In a major step towards preserving India’s rich heritage of medicinal plants and spreading knowledge about their benefits, the National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) under the Ministry of Ayush has signed two important Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). The initiative aims not only to conserve rare medicinal species but also to increase public awareness of their role in healthcare. The signing ceremony was held at Nirman Bhawan, New Delhi, in the presence of Union Minister of State for Ayush (Independent Charge) and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav.
MoU with IshVed-Bioplants Venture: Conserving Rare Medicinal Plants
The first MoU was signed between NMPB and Pune-based IshVed-Bioplants Venture. This agreement focuses on the conservation of germplasm of rare, endangered, and threatened (RET) medicinal plants using tissue culture techniques. The initiative will help strengthen cultivation protocols, ensuring the long-term availability of RET plants that are crucial for the Ayush sector. By adopting advanced techniques like tissue culture, the project is expected to create a sustainable supply chain for medicinal plants that are otherwise on the brink of extinction.
Tripartite MoU for National Medicinal Plants Garden
- The second MoU, a tripartite agreement, was signed among the NMPB, the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.
- The highlight of this collaboration is the establishment of a National Medicinal Plants Garden on the AIIMS campus.
- The garden will act as an educational and awareness hub, helping patients, students, and visitors understand the healing potential of medicinal plants.
- This living resource center will promote the integration of traditional medicinal knowledge with modern healthcare systems.
Vision for a Healthy and Self-Reliant India
These agreements are aligned with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to create a healthy and self-reliant India by 2047. These MoUs mark a significant milestone in our efforts to protect India’s rich heritage of medicinal flora and promote its integration with modern healthcare systems.”
