Bhopal Ranks 5th In Swachh Survekshan 2023 Cleanliness

Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, has made significant strides in cleanliness, emerging as the 5th cleanest city in India among those with a population exceeding 1 lakh. The Bhopal Municipal Corporation’s persistent efforts have not only elevated its ranking from 6th in 2022 but also earned it a coveted 5-star Garbage Free City (GFC) rating, making it the cleanest State capital in the nation.

Distinctive Practices Leading to Success

Bhopal’s ascent can be attributed to a combination of best practices, innovation, and distinctiveness. The city produces 850 tons of waste daily, and what sets it apart is its commitment to processing the entire waste stream every day. The focus on scientific waste disposal, waste-to-wealth projects, recycling initiatives, and the mantra of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3Rs) are pivotal in Bhopal’s success.

Efficient Waste Collection and Segregation

Bhopal’s approach to waste management involves the deployment of 469 door-to-door garbage collection vehicles and 202 road sweeping waste collection vehicles for routine cleaning. A well-organized segregation system operates across 12 Transfer Stations in the city, with 6 Material Recovery Facility (MRF) centers contributing to effective waste processing.

Transformation of Bhanpur Dumpsite

A notable achievement is the transformation of the Bhanpur dumpsite into a green area, reflecting Bhopal’s commitment to sustainable urban planning. Reclaiming 21 acres of land and establishing a park on 16 acres showcases the city’s dedication to environmental sustainability.

Innovative Hazardous Waste Management

Bhopal has shifted from traditional waste treatment by utilizing hazardous waste as a valuable source of fuel. Collaborating with Hazargo Industry Pithampur, the city established the first preprocessing plant for scientific management of hazardous waste from homes, offices, and factories. Additionally, a common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility ensures comprehensive handling of medical waste.

Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste Management

Bhopal efficiently manages C&D waste with a 100 TPD processing plant in Thuakheda. This facility segregates waste materials and converts them into fly ash bricks and paver blocks, showcasing a sustainable approach to waste utilization.

Liquid Waste Management

The city boasts a comprehensive system for liquid waste management, with 18 sewage treatment plants (STPs) and 8 co-treatment plants. Approximately 31% of treated water is reused in various applications, demonstrating Bhopal’s commitment to water conservation.

Ongoing and Future Initiatives

Ongoing projects include agreements with NTPC for a 400 TPD dry Municipal Solid Waste to torrefied charcoal plant and the installation of a Bio-CNG plant with a daily processing capacity of 400 TPD. These initiatives are expected to contribute significantly to organic manure production and further propel Bhopal’s journey towards becoming a garbage-free city.
