Boosting Indigenous Defence Production: Centre Inks Two Crucial Deals Worth Rs 802 Crore

In a significant move towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing, the Ministry of Defence has finalized two pivotal contracts, collectively valued at Rs 802 crore. The agreements include the procurement of 697 Bogie Open Military (BOM) Wagons and 56 Mechanical Minefield Marking Equipment (MMME) Mark II from domestic firms.

Indigenous Manufacturing Thrust

The contracts, signed with M/s Jupiter Wagons Limited and M/s BEML Ltd, underscore the commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat, with both deals emphasizing the utilization of indigenous equipment and sub-systems. This strategic approach aims to bolster the participation of the private sector in defence production.

Bogie Open Military Wagons

Designed by the Research Design and Standard Organization (RDSO), the 697 BOM Wagons serve as specialized military transport for swiftly mobilizing units. These wagons play a pivotal role in transporting a range of military assets, including light vehicles, artillery guns, BMPs, and engineering equipment, ensuring rapid deployment during conflict and facilitating peacetime movements for military exercises.

Mechanical Minefield Marking Equipment

The procurement includes 56 MMME Mark II units from M/s BEML Ltd. This equipment, designed for cross-country operations, expedites minefield marking with advanced mechanical and electrical systems. The MMME enhances the operational capabilities of the Indian Army by minimizing time and manpower requirements during minefield marking, a mandatory protocol under international agreements.
