ICC Champions Trophy is one of the most anticipated tournaments in cricket and is set to return after an 8-year gap. This year Champions Trophy will be played in the ODI format, with each team consisting of 50 overs per inning. This stands the long-standing tradition of the tournament and aligns with its previous editions.
The Champions Trophy has historically been an ODI tournament, played in the 50-over format since its inception in 1988. The last edition of the tournament, held in 2017 also followed same ODI format and the 2025 edition also follow the same format. This Champions trophy serves as the mini world cup for ODI’s featuring only the top eight teams based on ICC rankings.
Format for Champions Trophy 2025
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially confirmed that the champions trophy 2025 will remain a 50-over tournament. Each team will play a full ODI match, consisting of 50 overs per innings, which test a team stamina, strategy and adaptability over a longer format.
The tournament format will be:
- Eight teams will play in the tournament.
- Each team plays two group-stage matches.
- The top two teams from each group qualify for the semi-finals.
- Winners of the Semi-finals play in the final.
