The 23rd Commonwealth Games are being held in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August 2026, featuring athletes from 74 Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs) competing across 215 medal events in 10 sports. Even before the competition gained momentum, India secured its first medal thanks to boxer Lovlina Borgohain, who advanced directly to the women’s 75kg boxing semifinals.

Australia has once again emerged as the early leader in the medal standings, continuing the dominance it displayed at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Australia Continues Its Dominance

Australia entered the Glasgow Games as the defending champions after finishing at the top of the medal table in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games with:

The country has continued its impressive performance in Glasgow and is once again leading the medal standings.

England, Canada, India, and New Zealand are also expected to remain among the strongest medal contenders throughout the Games.

India Opens Medal Account Before the Main Competition

India achieved a unique milestone by winning its first medal even before the official medal events fully commenced.

Lovlina Borgohain Assured of a Medal

Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain received a bye in the women’s 75kg boxing quarterfinal, automatically advancing to the semifinal.

Since both losing semifinalists receive bronze medals in Commonwealth Games boxing, Lovlina is guaranteed at least a bronze medal.

The women’s 75kg category features only five boxers, with three athletes receiving direct semifinal berths:

Lovlina Eyes Redemption After Birmingham Disappointment

The Glasgow Games provide Lovlina with an opportunity to make up for her disappointing campaign at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where she was eliminated in the quarterfinals after a closely contested 2-3 split decision defeat against Rosie Eccles of Wales in the 70kg category.

Having already secured a medal in Glasgow, the Indian boxer will now aim to reach the final and improve the colour of her medal.
