Amit Shah Launches Bank in a Box for Cooperative Banks
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launched ‘Bank in a Box’ and a dedicated Security Operations Centre (SOC) for Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) at the ‘Sahkar Nav-Kranti’ programme in Mumbai. The integrated platform will provide core banking, digital payments, cloud infrastructure, regulatory compliance, loan origination, Aadhaar-based services and AI-driven fraud prevention. The SOC will offer round-the-clock cybersecurity monitoring and support, while technologies such as MuleHunter will help detect suspicious transactions and potential mule accounts. NUCFDC, the UCB umbrella organisation, has been capitalised with about ₹306 crore, with nearly 650 of around 1,400 UCBs joining so far. Shah urged all banks to join within a year. NUCFDC also signed an MoU with NFSU for cybersecurity training, digital forensics and research.
E-Samudra Platform Launched to Modernise India’s Maritime Governance
India launched E-Samudra on August 8, 2026, a comprehensive digital maritime governance platform designed to provide single-window services for seafarers, shipping companies, ports and other stakeholders. The platform offers online payments, real-time tracking, digital certificates and streamlined workflows under the Digital First and Faceless Governance approach. Supporting measures include 24×7 e-NAVIK grievance redressal, a proposed Seafarer Tracking Dashboard, Digital Seafarers Employment Agreement (d-SEA) and enhanced welfare initiatives through the Seafarers Welfare Fund Society. The government noted that active Indian seafarers increased from around 1.03 lakh in 2013 to over 3.23 lakh in 2025, making India the world’s second-largest seafarer supplier. The initiative supports Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
DigiLocker, AAERI Launch Digital Verification for Indian Students
The National e-Governance Division (NeGD) under MeitY partnered with the Association of Australian Education Representatives in India (AAERI) to launch AAERI Verify, a digital document authentication platform for Indian students seeking higher education in Australia. Unveiled at the AAERI Annual Convention in New Delhi on August 7, 2026, the platform integrates with DigiLocker to enable secure, paperless and consent-based verification of academic, identity and financial documents. Its two-stage process includes student credential checks before applications and sponsor financial verification after admission offers. Students can share digitally signed records directly from authorised issuing institutions, reducing reliance on physical documents and manual checks. The initiative aims to speed up admissions, strengthen document authenticity, reduce fraud risks and simplify overseas university verification for Indian students.
Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign Launched in Andaman and Nicobar
Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan launched the Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on August 9, 2026, marking August Kranti Diwas and recalling the Quit India Movement of 1942. India Crosses 300 GW Non-Fossil Power Capacity Milestone
India crossed 300 GW of installed non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity, reaching 300.50 GW as of July 31, 2026, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Solar leads with 164.59 GW, followed by wind at 58.14 GW, hydropower at 57.24 GW, bio-power at 11.75 GW and nuclear power at 8.78 GW. Non-fossil sources now account for over 54% of India’s approximately 552 GW total installed power capacity, placing the country more than 60% toward its 500 GW target for 2030. During 2025-26, India added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil capacity, including 44.6 GW solar and 6 GW wind. Renewable generation increased from 190.96 BU in 2014-15 to 477.79 BU in 2025-26.
CPGRAMS Strengthens India’s Digital Public Grievance Redressal System
The Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) is India’s flagship digital platform for submitting and monitoring complaints related to government services. Developed and monitored by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), it connects citizens with Central ministries, departments, State governments and Union Territories through a unified system. Citizens receive a unique registration ID after filing a grievance, enabling online status tracking and monitoring. CPGRAMS provides 24×7 access, supports 22 scheduled Indian languages besides English and follows a “One Nation–One Portal” approach by integrating grievance platforms. Its framework requires grievances to be resolved within a maximum of 21 days, promoting administrative accountability and timely responses. An appeal mechanism further strengthens transparency and provides citizens an additional avenue when dissatisfied with grievance resolution.
Asiatic Lion Population Surges to 891 After Conservation Efforts
India’s Asiatic lion population increased from 523 in 2015 to 891 in 2025, recording a rise of 368 lions, or nearly 70%. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav highlighted the achievement on World Lion Day 2026 and credited forest officials, conservationists, local communities and other stakeholders. The lions’ geographical range has also expanded from around 30,000 sq km in 2020 to nearly 35,000 sq km. Project Lion, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2020, supports habitat improvement, disease monitoring, veterinary care, scientific population assessment, technology-based conservation, biodiversity protection and community participation. The Greater Gir landscape in Gujarat remains the species’ principal natural habitat in India. The conservation strategy aims to maintain healthy lion populations while promoting coexistence and protecting the wider ecosystem.

Tamil Nadu Makes Tamil Thai Vazhthu First at Events
The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on August 10, 2026, unanimously adopted a resolution making Tamil Thai Vazhthu the first song at official events across the state. The rule covers government departments, universities, educational institutions, public sector undertakings and other public organisations. The resolution was moved by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and adopted through a voice vote, with support from DMK, AIADMK, Congress and BJP members. The move followed controversy over the sequence of Tamil Thai Vazhthu, Vande Mataram and the National Anthem at official functions. Tamil Thai Vazhthu, drawn from Manonmaniam by Manonmaniam Sundaranar, was made the State Song in 2021, following decades of official use in Tamil Nadu.

New Kalamati Range Office Strengthens Sonai Rupai Wildlife Protection
Assam inaugurated the new Kalamati Wildlife Range Office at Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary in Sonitpur district on August 7, 2026. Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah inaugurated the facility, which is expected to strengthen field-level forest administration, patrolling, habitat protection, wildlife monitoring and conservation activities. Spread across about 220 sq km, with a core area of nearly 175 sq km, Sonai Rupai lies in Assam’s Himalayan foothills and contains evergreen forests, grasslands and important river systems. Government Clarifies UPI Users Will Continue Paying No Charges
The Government of India has clarified that UPI users will not face transaction charges, with all Person-to-Person (P2P) payments remaining free. The clarification follows debate surrounding proposed amendments to the Payment and Settlement Systems Act (PSS Act). The government said any future Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) would apply only to a limited category of merchant transactions above a specified threshold and at a nominal rate, while most merchant UPI payments would remain free. Following Parliament’s approval of the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, the NPCI-led UPI and Services Steering Committee would decide whether MDR is introduced. UPI processed 2,366 crore transactions worth ₹29.9 lakh crore in July 2026 and is operational in 11 foreign countries.

Government Extends ED Director Rahul Navin’s Tenure Until 2027
The Government of India has extended Enforcement Directorate Director Rahul Navin’s tenure by one year, allowing him to continue until August 13, 2027. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension, covering the period from August 13, 2026. Rahul Navin, a 1993-batch Indian Revenue Service officer, was earlier scheduled to complete his tenure on August 13, 2026. His extended tenure will also continue beyond his scheduled retirement date of July 31, 2027. As ED Director, Navin heads the country’s specialised financial investigation agency, which probes money laundering, foreign exchange violations and fugitive economic offences under laws including the PMLA, FEMA and FEOA. The extension provides continuity in the agency’s leadership.
Supreme Court Collegium Recommends New Calcutta, Bombay Chief Justices
The Supreme Court Collegium, in its August 6, 2026 resolution, recommended Justice Ravindra V Ghuge and Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi as Chief Justices of the Calcutta and Bombay High Courts, respectively. Justice Ghuge, currently Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, has nearly 13 years of judicial experience and was elevated in June 2013. He is recommended to succeed Acting Chief Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty at Calcutta. Exercise Talisman Sabre 2027 will be held from August 9 to August 22, 2027, making it a 14-day multinational military exercise led by Australia and the United States. The upcoming edition is expected to be the largest and most ambitious in the series, involving Australia, the US and 24 additional partner nations. India is set to enhance its participation, reflecting strengthening defence ties with Australia and greater Indo-Pacific engagement. The decision was welcomed during the second India-Australia Defence Ministers’ Dialogue on June 1, 2026, co-chaired by Defence Ministers Rajnath Singh and Richard Marles. Around 800 personnel are involved in planning the exercise. Delhi Lakshmi Yojana Registrations Cross Five Lakh in Week
The Delhi Lakshmi Yojana has crossed five lakh registrations within a week of its launch, reflecting strong interest among women in the capital. The government said the portal recorded 4.87 lakh registrations and 1.99 lakh submitted applications by Friday evening before registrations surpassed five lakh by Saturday afternoon. The scheme, initially approved as Mahila Samriddhi Yojana, was renamed to emphasise women’s welfare and economic empowerment. Beneficiaries receive ₹2,500 monthly through two options. Under one, ₹1,000 goes to a Central Bank Digital Currency wallet and ₹1,500 to an RD/FD, while the second allows the entire ₹2,500 to be saved through an RD/FD. The initiative aims to provide immediate household support while promoting long-term financial security and savings among women.
