Coal Ministry Releases First Annual Scientific Mine Closure Report
The Ministry of Coal will sign a technical cooperation agreement with Germany’s Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on 22 July 2026 to promote scientific mine closure, environmental restoration, and sustainable post-mining land development. The partnership will facilitate knowledge exchange, institutional capacity building, and adoption of global best practices for rehabilitating closed coal mines. Scientific mine closure includes land stabilisation, ecosystem restoration, water management, vegetation recovery, and sustainable future land use. The initiative will strengthen existing programmes such as RECLAIM, L.I.V.E.S., and SUVIKALP. During the event, the Ministry will also release its first AAROH (Annual Report on Mine Closure), documenting the scientific closure of 42 coal mines since Independence. The programme aligns with India’s commitment to responsible mining, environmental sustainability, and long-term community development.

Maharashtra Approves India’s First AI-Powered Bird Sanctuary Project
Maharashtra is developing India’s first AI-powered bird sanctuary at the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. The state government has approved a ₹45 crore Eco-Nature Park featuring an artificial intelligence-based bird detection and monitoring centre. The AI system will identify bird species, track movements, and collect ecological data in real time. Located near Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, Thane Creek is an important wetland ecosystem and attracts thousands of migratory birds, including flamingos. The project will include birdwatching towers, nature trails, interactive displays, and educational facilities. The initiative aims to combine advanced technology with wildlife conservation while promoting sustainable eco-tourism and improving scientific monitoring of bird populations.
Madhya Pradesh Uniform Civil Code Bill 2026
The Madhya Pradesh Cabinet approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill 2026, making it the fourth Indian state after Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam to introduce such legislation. The Bill aims to create common civil laws related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, maintenance, and live-in relationships. It proposes mandatory marriage registration, registration of live-in relationships within one month, equal inheritance rights for sons and daughters, and a common standard of monogamy. Practices such as polygamy, triple talaq, and nikah halala are prohibited under the proposed law. However, Scheduled Tribes and Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups are exempted to protect their customary traditions. The Bill is based on Article 44 of the Indian Constitution.
Mission Golden Spice Boosts Meghalaya’s Lakadong Turmeric Value Chain
The Government of India and Meghalaya launched Mission Golden Spice – Integrated Lakadong Turmeric Value Chain Enhancement Project to boost the production, processing, branding, and export of GI-tagged Lakadong Turmeric. Started on 21 July 2026 with an investment of ₹175.45 crore, the five-year mission aims to expand cultivation from 2,500 hectares to 7,000 hectares by 2030. Lakadong Turmeric is globally valued for its high curcumin content of 7–12%. The project will benefit over 17,500 farmers, mostly women, by improving income, processing facilities, and market access. It also aims to develop a ₹100 crore turmeric economy and increase exports to markets like the US, Europe, Japan, and Gulf countries.

France Bans Social Media Access for Children Under Fifteen
France has approved a landmark law that will ban children under 15 from accessing social media platforms from January 2027, making it the first European country to introduce such nationwide restrictions. EnKash has launched India’s first UPI-enabled Meal Card, integrating employee meal benefits with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to enable seamless payments by scanning eligible UPI QR codes. Available in both physical and virtual formats, the prepaid card supports tap, swipe, scan, and online transactions through the RuPay network. Following revised Income Tax Rules effective 1 April 2026, employees can receive a tax-free meal allowance of up to ₹8,800 per month (₹1,05,600 annually). Accepted at over 5 lakh food and grocery outlets and platforms like Swiggy, Zomato, and Blinkit, the card also offers employers instant issuance, bulk wallet reloading, spending controls, and real-time tracking. India’s Fertiliser Exports Rise Fifty-Two Percent During FY26
India’s fertiliser exports increased by nearly 52% between FY24 and FY26, rising from 0.31 million tonnes to 0.47 million tonnes. The growth was driven mainly by exports of potassium sulphate, superphosphates, organic fertilisers, and other specialised products. Brazil emerged as the largest buyer, with exports rising significantly during the period. However, India continues to depend heavily on imports, especially for urea, DAP, and MOP fertilisers. Imports increased to 28.17 million tonnes in FY26. The country relies on overseas sources for raw materials like natural gas, rock phosphate, and potash. While export growth strengthens India’s position in global fertiliser markets, reducing import dependence remains important for agricultural security and stable food production.

Paras Semiconductors to Build ₹6,200 Crore OSAT Facility
Paras Semiconductors Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of Paras Defence and Space Technologies, has signed an MoU with the MP State Electronics Development Corporation to establish a ₹6,200 crore greenfield semiconductor packaging and OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) facility in the Indore–Ujjain region of Madhya Pradesh. The project supports the India Semiconductor Mission by strengthening domestic semiconductor assembly, packaging, and testing capabilities. The facility will use advanced technologies such as 3D integration, chiplet integration, hybrid bonding, wafer bumping, and flip-chip assembly.
