DRDO Conducts High-Altitude Trial of Integrated Life Support System for Tejas Aircraft

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted a high-altitude trial of an indigenous Integrated Life Support System (ILSS) for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas. This On-Board Oxygen Generating System-based (OBOGS) ILSS eliminates the need for conventional liquid oxygen cylinders by generating and managing breathable oxygen for aircrew during flight. The trial, conducted by the Defence Bio-Engineering & Electro Medical Laboratory (DEBEL) in Bengaluru, demonstrated the system’s capability under extreme conditions, paving the way for its implementation in other aircraft such as the MiG 29K.

Key Highlights

Trial and Development

  • Conducted by DRDO’s Defence Bio-Engineering & Electro Medical Laboratory (DEBEL).
  • Successfully tested under high-altitude conditions up to 50,000 feet.

System Features

  • Based on On-Board Oxygen Generating System (OBOGS) technology.
  • Eliminates the need for traditional liquid oxygen cylinder-based systems.
  • Capable of real-time oxygen generation and management during flight.

Testing and Certification

  • Tested on the LCA-PV-3 aircraft developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA).
  • Evaluated under stringent aero-medical standards and varied flight conditions.
  • Flight clearance granted by the Centre for Military Airworthiness & Certification (CEMILAC).

Performance and Capabilities

  • Assessed for oxygen concentration, demand breathing, and aerobatic manoeuvres at high altitudes.
  • Met all specified parameters and functional requirements.

Potential for Broader Implementation

  • System can be modified for use in MiG 29K and other aircraft series.
  • Indigenous Manufacturing:
  • Developed with 90% indigenous content.
  • Manufactured by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) as the development-cum-production partner.
