Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful flight-test of Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR) at the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur on 8th of July, 2026. The rocket was tested for a user defined minimum range of 60 kms. The Pinaka LRGR followed its planned trajectory perfectly and hit its target with great accuracy.
What Is the Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket?
The Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR) is an innovative guided artillery rocket intended to improve the striking power of the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system of the Indian Army.
As opposed to normal rockets, the LRGR uses high-tech guidance technology to hit specific targets accurately and deal with enemies from a considerable distance away.
This system allows for enhancing the effectiveness in the battlefield due to the combination of distance with high precision of strikes.
The Successful Flight Test Highlights
All the intended goals were achieved during the latest flight test.
Salient points for this test can be listed as,
- The flight was operated at the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur on 8 July 2026.
- The flight checked that the rocket’s minimum operational range is working at 60 km.
- The flight was able to perform the different in-flight maneuvers.
- The trajectory of the flight was perfectly followed.
- The target has been hit with full accuracy.
- The entire flight was under constant monitoring of range instrumentation.
The flight successfully validates the reliability of the rocket’s guidance, navigation, and control systems flying under operational conditions.
Developed through Indigenous Collaboration
The application of Pinaka LRGR has been achieved through teamwork among several laboratories of DRDO. The agencies that were involved in the process of development were,
- Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) – It acted as the leading design authority.
- High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) – It was responsible for the propulsion and energetic materials.
- Defense Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) – It has rendered technical support services.
- Research Center Imarat (RCI) – It offered guidance and advanced technologies.
The launch was conducted by,
- Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur
- Proof & Experimental Establishment (PXE)
The project indicates that India is capable of creating and producing advanced guided rocket systems by using local resources.
Strategic Significance of the Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket.
The effective testing of the long-range precision strike capability acts as a reminder of India’s combat readiness.
It offers various advantages which includes,
- An enhanced standoff attack capacity.
- Improved precision on the battlefield.
- Increased flexibility in the operation.
- Reduced dependency on imported precision missile systems.
- Rise in local manufacturing of defense systems as part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Precision-guided munitions are becoming vital in modern warfare as they enable the military to eliminate critical targets with minimum collateral damage.
