Dubai to Launch 15-km Corridor for Driverless Transport by 2026

In a major leap toward smart transportation, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the launch of the Dubai Autonomous Zone (DAZ)—a 15-kilometre dedicated corridor for driverless vehicles and marine transport. The initiative, revealed at the Dubai World Congress for Self-Driving Transport, aligns with Dubai’s ambition to make 25% of daily trips autonomous by 2030. The zone is expected to be operational in early 2026 and will span across key mobility hubs like Al Jaddaf Metro Station, Dubai Creek Harbour, and Dubai Festival City.

A Fully Integrated Autonomous Network

The DAZ will offer a seamlessly connected ecosystem of autonomous transport options,

• Driverless Metro
• RoboTaxis and RoboBuses
• Autonomous shuttles and logistics vehicles
• Delivery robots and road-sweeping bots
• Self-driving marine abras (water taxis)

According to Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA’s Public Transport Agency, the zone will represent “a future where every mode of transport—from taxis to street cleaners—operates autonomously and integrates for maximum efficiency.”

RoboTaxis and Partnerships with Uber & WeRide

• The RTA confirmed that pilot trials for RoboTaxis will begin by late 2025, with a target of 1,000 autonomous taxis by 2028. These self-driving vehicles are being developed in partnership with Uber and WeRide, with app-based services to be launched in early 2026.
• This collaboration will allow passengers to book RoboTaxis via existing ride-hailing apps, offering the same convenience with lower costs, shorter wait times, and eco-friendly electric fleets.

Safety and Real-World Testing

• Dubai is prioritizing safety and performance validation, with over 50 autonomous vehicles currently under testing in areas such as Jumeirah. The tests are collecting real-world data to ensure the reliability of sensors, traffic responsiveness, and pedestrian safety.
• The model draws on successful case studies like Abu Dhabi’s TXAI program, which has completed over 430,000 kilometres without a major incident.
