Date of Father’s Day 2025
Father’s Day is observed every year on the third Sunday of June. In 2025, Father’s Day will be celebrated on 15th June. Countries such as India, the United States, and the United Kingdom observe it on this day. However, some countries like Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Croatia celebrate Father’s Day on 19th March, which is also Saint Joseph’s Day.
History of Father’s Day
The idea of Father’s Day has its roots in both tragedy and tribute. The first known Father’s Day was held in 1908 in West Virginia, United States, after a coal mine explosion killed 361 men. A memorial service was organized to honor the fathers who lost their lives, but it did not become a yearly tradition.
The modern celebration of Father’s Day began with Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington state. She was inspired by Mother’s Day and wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children as a single parent. Thanks to her efforts, the first official Father’s Day was celebrated on 19th June 1910 in Spokane. Over time, the idea spread and gained national recognition.
Significance of Father’s Day
Father’s Day highlights the important role that fathers play in the growth and development of a child. A father’s guidance, discipline, love, and support help shape a child’s values and character. Whether biological or chosen, father figures serve as role models, protectors, and mentors. This day reminds us to express our respect and appreciation for everything they do for us.
