ICC Moves Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 to UAE Due to Bangladesh Unrest

The ICC has announced the relocation of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to significant safety concerns. The event, originally set to be hosted in Bangladesh, will now take place from October 3 to 20 in Dubai and Sharjah. This decision follows a series of political upheavals in Bangladesh, including unrest and the flight of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which led to travel advisories from several participating countries.

Decision Background

The move was confirmed after a virtual board meeting where the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) consented to the change. Despite efforts by the new interim government to retain the event through the United Nations, the escalating unrest and the issuance of travel advisories made it impractical to proceed with the event in Bangladesh.

ICC’s Statement

Geoff Allardice, ICC Chief Executive, expressed disappointment over the venue change, acknowledging the BCB’s efforts to host the event. Allardice stated, “It is a shame not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event.” However, he affirmed that Bangladesh will retain hosting rights for future ICC events.

Current Situation in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has been grappling with severe unrest since early August, following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and subsequent departure from the country. The turmoil has resulted in over 230 deaths, with the overall death toll exceeding 600 since mid-July due to protests against government job quotas. The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has been unable to stabilize the situation promptly.

Impact on Women’s T20 World Cup

The UAE’s proximity and established infrastructure made it a feasible alternative for the tournament. The decision ensures minimal logistical disruption and continues the tradition of the UAE as a host for major cricket events, including the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup. ICC’s decision underscores the challenges faced in organizing international sports events amidst political instability.
