For the fifth time a row, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has clinched the third position in the World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA) 2026 Global Air Power Rankings, it is ahead of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) of China. But it besides the USAF and the Russian Air Force, the IAF is ranked third only in terms of the number of its fleet of aircraft but also in terms of the operational capabilities of the aircraft, the diversity of the its aircraft types, modernization and logistics of the IAF.
What is the Global Air Power Ranking by WDMMA?
WDMMA is an organization which is independently ranks and evaluates air forces based on their operational capacity, which is evaluated beyond the fleet size.
In the Rankings of 2026, WDMMA has evaluated total,
- 129 military air forces globally
- 103 countries
- More than 48,000 military aircraft
The WDMMA uses its True Value Rating (TVR), which is its proprietary ranking technique.
What is the True Value Rating (TVR)?
Instead of just using the number of aircraft to rank different air forces, the WDMMA uses a True Value Rating (TVR) to understand how the effective an air force is.
The TVR system takes into account several factors such as,
- Fleet size
- Aircraft composition
- Modernization level
- Readiness for operations
- Logistics support
- Mission capability
- Special mission aircraft
- Air-to-air refueling capability
- Transport aircraft
- Training aircraft
- Domestic aerospace production
- Future procurement plan
The best score that can be achieved by a military air service is total 242.9, which was achieved by the US Airforce.
