Indian Army Launches Indigenous XWG Diesel for Tanks and Combat Vehicles Operating at -42°C

The Indian Army has unveiled the Xtreme Weather Grade (XWG) diesel fuel, which has been manufactured with Indian technology. The introduction of this fuel will allow the military to operate their vehicles in extremely harsh conditions. The diesel can function in temperatures as low as -42°C. Therefore, it is expected to provide tremendous opportunities for the combat readiness and mobility of armored vehicles and other vehicles. The XWG diesel has been developed in partnership with leading oil companies in India.

What Does XWG Diesel?

Xtreme Weather Grade (XWG) diesel is a unique fuel designed for use in very low temperatures.

Unlike standard diesel, which becomes viscous and blocks filter lines at low temperatures, XWG diesel remains fluid and usable even at -42 degrees Celsius.

This means there are no interruptions in engine functions for vehicles in snow-covered territories or areas of high altitude.

The XWG diesel meets BS-VI standards, as well as IS 1460:2025 specifications.

Why the Indian Army Needed XWG Diesel tanks?

The necessity of XWG diesel for the Indian Army has arisen due to their presence of many tanks, infantry combat vehicles, and logistics vehicles in the high-altitude areas of Eastern Ladakh among other regions.

Since winter temperatures dip so low that conventional diesel tends to freeze or to become very viscous, which leads to,
