Ankur Bhattacharjee, Yashaswini Ghorpade Win Commonwealth TT Singles Titles

Indian table tennis players Ankur Bhattacharjee and Yashaswini Ghorpade won the titles of men’s and women’s singles champions, at the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships. The Indian contingent turned in an impressive performance, winning four out of the five golds available, signifying India’s rise as a table tennis powerhouse in the Commonwealth. Although India could not sweep all titles after badminton player Malaysia snatched the gold in the men’s doubles arena, Indian players excelled in singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles events.

Ankur Bhattacharjee Wins Exciting Men’s Singles Title

After a thrilling seven-game battle against compatriot Payas Jain, Ankur Bhattacharjee was declared the winner.

Both men were equally matched in the match, with both players giving an outstanding performance throughout. At one point in the last game, Payas went ahead 7-4, and looked set to win.

In spite of this, Ankur’s decision to take a tactical break helped him regain his composure before leveling the score at 8-8 with an 11-9 win in the last game after Payas’ return went long.

Yashaswini Ghorpade is the Champion of Women’s Singles Event

In the final match of women’s singles event, Yashaswini Ghorpade performed brilliantly by overcoming the seasoned Indian player Sreeja Akula.

Yashaswini asserted her dominance in the first two games by winning them with 11-6 and 11-1 scores.

In the third game, Sreeja tried mounting the comeback but Yashaswini gained momentum again and at last closed the match with a narrow victory in 5th game by a score of 13-11.

The event was marked by her poised behaviour on the court, especially when Sreeja made it difficult for her by saving two match points.

India Wins Four of Five Gold Medals

India won four out of the five gold medals up for grabs at the tournament.

The only event that India could not win was the men’s doubles event, where the Malaysian duo of Shen Qi Wong and Javen Choong created a major upset by defeating Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah in straight sets.

This eliminated the possibility of India getting all gold medals from this tournament.

Women’s Doubles

Two Indian players Sreeja Akula and Syndrela Das clashed against each other in the final match of the women’s doubles, where they defeated Yashaswini Ghorpade and Divyanshi Bhowmick.

Mixed Doubles

Another victory for India came in the mixed doubles event where Manav Thakkar and Taneesha Kotecha played a thrilling final match against Malaysia’s Ai Xin Tee and Richard Rui Zhe Yap.
