The Indian Navy’s Naval Aircraft Yard (Kochi) has formed “Air Evacuation Pod (AEP)” for the safe evacuation of COVID-19 patients from remote areas. The pod is made up of aluminium, nitrile rubber and perspex. It weighs only 32 kg and has incurred a manufacturing cost of Rs 50,000 which is only 0.1 per cent of the cost of an imported equivalent (Rs 59 lakh).

The pod was designed under the guidance of the Principal Medical Officer of the naval air station. INS Garuda in consultation with a specialist from the naval hospital INHS Sanjivani and Head Quarters of Southern Naval Command.
