Indian Navy To Commission ‘Ikshak’ for Hydrographic Excellence

The Indian Navy is set to commission SVL Ikshak on 6 November 2025 at Naval Base Kochi, a major leap forward in the nation’s maritime and hydrographic capabilities. As the third vessel of the Survey Vessel (Large) class, and the first to be based at the Southern Naval Command, Ikshak represents India’s growing emphasis on maritime domain awareness and indigenous defence production.

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, Ikshak boasts over 80% indigenous content, exemplifying the spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Its commissioning reflects not only strategic self-reliance but also India’s push for technological excellence in the maritime sector.

Strategic Significance of SVL Ikshak

Hydrographic survey ships are essential for mapping seabeds, ensuring safe navigation, and supporting naval and commercial operations. India’s vast coastline and expanding maritime interests demand a modern, robust survey fleet, and Ikshak is designed to fill this gap efficiently.

With its state-of-the-art systems and diverse operational capabilities, Ikshak strengthens India’s ability to,

  • Conduct detailed coastal and deep-water surveys
  • Support port development and navigational safety
  • Enhance maritime security infrastructure
  • Assist in disaster response and environmental monitoring

Design, Capabilities & Role

The name ‘Ikshak’, meaning ‘Guide’ in Sanskrit, reflects its precise and vital role in charting uncharted waters. As a multi-role hydrographic vessel, Ikshak is equipped with a range of cutting-edge technologies,

  • Multi-beam echo sounder for detailed seabed mapping
  • Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) for unmanned data collection
  • Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) for underwater inspection
  • Four Survey Motor Boats (SMBs) to support shallow-water operations
  • Helicopter deck for extended range and rapid deployment

Its dual-use capability means it can also be deployed in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations, significantly boosting India’s maritime readiness and response.

A Symbol of Indigenous Defence Strength

  • Ikshak exemplifies the Indian Navy’s collaboration with the domestic defence industry.
  • With more than 80% indigenous systems, the ship showcases India’s growing expertise in building sophisticated naval platforms.
  • It also highlights the strong involvement of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in delivering critical components, encouraging local innovation and employment.
  • This commissioning is a testament to India’s aim of achieving self-reliance in defence production, reducing dependency on foreign imports, and elevating India’s status as a key player in the global maritime domain.
