India’s Successful Test of Prithvi-II and Agni-I Ballistic Missiles

India demonstrated its strategic defence capabilities by successfully test-firing the nuclear-capable Prithvi-II and Agni-I ballistic missiles from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha on July 17, 2025. Both tests, conducted under the Strategic Forces Command, validated all operational parameters and reinforced India’s indigenous missile strength.

Background

Prithvi-II and Agni-I are part of India’s homegrown missile arsenal, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Prithvi-II is a surface-to-surface short-range ballistic missile with a range of around 250–350 km, capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads. Agni-I is a road and rail mobile missile with a range of 700–900 km and a payload capacity of 1,000 kg.

These tests are crucial for maintaining India’s credible minimum deterrence posture, enhancing operational readiness, and sending a strategic message to adversaries. Conducting routine validation amid regional security tensions further strengthens India’s defence preparedness.
