INS Amini Delivered to Indian Navy: Indigenous Anti-Submarine Warfare Craft Strengthens Coastal Defence

The Indian Navy has received an indigenously-designed and developed Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) called Amini from Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata. It is fitted with detection systems to counter undersea threats and will boost the Navy’s coastal monitoring capabilities and anti-submarine warfare capabilities. It also has over 80% indigenous content highlighting India’s efforts to become self-reliant in defence production as part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Important Features of Amini

This Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) has been specifically designed to operate in coastal and shallow waters. These vessels help the Navy detect, monitor and combat undersea threats like submarines.

Some key features of the vessel include,

  • Waterjet-driven: This is one of the largest warships in the Indian Navy to be driven using waterjets.
  • Light torpedoes: Combat undersea threats.
  • Indigenously Developed rocket launchers: Combat submarine threats.
  • Sonar: Detect and monitor objects under the sea.
  • Multi-role: Help to combat submarine threats, monitor coastal waters and lay mines.

The ship has been designed and built by GRSE to meet the standards set by the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).

Warship Name Background

Amini means Amini Island located in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep.

This will bring back memories of the previous INS Amini, which was an anti-submarine warfare corvette of the Petya III-class which was decommissioned in 2002. The Indian Navy have a long history of naming new warships after notable ships.

Increasing India’s Defence Self-Reliance

The ship has over 80% indigenous content as Indian shipyards and defence companies are becoming increasingly involved in the naval modernisation programme.

This helps support the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative as,

  • Encourages warship development.
  • Reduces reliance on foreign defence equipment.
  • Builds up the domestic defence industry.
  • Improves coastal security in India.

This is the fifth of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water craft to be built by GRSE for the Indian Navy. It was handed over in Kattupalli, Tamil Nadu on 5th November 2026. Note that handing over is different to commissioning.
