International Literacy Day is celebrated annually on September 8 with the intention of bringing to the fore literacy as a basic human right and a necessary prerequisite for learning, employment, engagement and sustainable development. The event has its roots in 1966 when UNESCO declared the day of International Literacy Day during its 14th General Conference. International Literacy Day was first observed in 1967.

The theme for 2026 is “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity.”
The theme links literacy with three other fields,

- Planet: Literacy enables an understanding of environmental issues.
- Prosperity: Literacy helps people get better access to education, jobs and skills.

Global Literacy Challenges for 2026
Even though there has been a remarkable rise in the literacy rates globally, a number of challenges still exist.
As indicated by UNESCO estimates reported during the observance in 2026, there were approximately 739 million youths and adults who lacked basic literacy skills according to 2024 statistics. Additionally, about four out of 10 children have not been attaining the minimal level of reading proficiency.
The observance of the 60th anniversary is thus an ideal platform to review the progress made over the last six decades as well as to identify the existing challenges.

This year, UNESCO’s celebration will take place on September 8 and 9, 2026, in Chiapas, Mexico, in partnership with the Government of Mexico.
