Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, succeeding Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra who retired on December 28, 2023. His appointment was recommended by the Supreme Court collegium in December last year and officially announced by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on July 3.
Swearing-In Ceremony
Justice Sarangi took oath as the 15th Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on July 5. The oath was administered by Governor CP Radhakrishnan at the Raj Bhavan in Ranchi. The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato, along with several judges and senior government officials.
Career Background
Justice Sarangi, previously a judge of the Orissa High Court, began his legal career in December 1985. He has extensive experience in various domains of law including civil, criminal, constitutional, revenue, tax, labour, service, mining, education, electricity, insurance, and banking. He was elevated to the bench as a permanent judge of the Orissa High Court on June 20, 2013.
