The newly introduced flower fields in Leh District have transformed the high-altitude region with their colorful beauty. Ladakh has introduced twin flower fields located at a height of 10,600 feet in the Leh District. The objective of introducing flower fields is to make commercial floriculture a new way to earn money for local farmers. These flower fields cover an area of 40 acres and have over 25 lakh flowers that include Lilium and Gladiolus. These flower fields were inaugurated by the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena on September 17.
Where Are the New Flower Fields of Ladakh?
These twin flower fields are situated at Choglamsar and Stakna in the Leh district of Ladakh. Located at the altitude of 10,600 feet, they are claimed to be the highest flower fields of the world and the highest flower fields of India as well.
The total area covered by the project is 40 acres, which consist of more than 25 lakh plants, which include,
- 24 lakh plants of Lilium
- 1 lakh plants of Gladiolus
It is the first of its kind experiment to introduce flower fields in the high altitude region of Leh District.
How Will the Project Help the Farmers?
This project is aimed at diversifying agriculture in Ladakh through the cultivation of commercially-oriented floriculture as a possible source of livelihood.
The Agriculture Department will cultivate the flowers during the first year and then hand them over to the chosen self-help groups (SHGs) and cooperatives during their blooming period. It will help in the marketing of flowers both in domestic and foreign markets.
After that year, the cooperatives will take responsibility for cultivating, harvesting and adding value to the flowers on their own.
Why is the Importance of Floriculture in Ladakh?
The climatic conditions prevailing in Ladakh provide an excellent opportunity for experimenting with ornamental flowers. As stated by the administration, there is an increasing demand for these flowers in domestic and international markets.
Lilies have reached about ₹60-70 per stem price in wholesale markets, while the prices in retail market are always higher. The demonstration and model center for floriculture will be established at the Choglamsar site where flowers like Lilium, Gladiolus, Tulips and other ornamental species will be cultivated.
Scientific cultivation of flowers is being done for the local farmers.
Development of Choglamsar Field in Two Months
The Choglamsar flower field has been developed within just two months. The plantation started on 16th July 2026, while blooming began in the first week of September.
At Stakna, nearly 14 lakh bulbs of Lilium have been planted in August, with blooming expected towards the end of October.
The Choglamsar Flower Garden would not only be recreational but would also serve an educational purpose and would be open for the public from 18th September.
