Luke Lindberg Appointed New World Food Programme Chief

The World Food Programme (WFP) of the United Nations has selected Luke J. Lindberg to be its next Executive Director, who will take charge of overseeing the UN body’s activities concerning offering food aid in cases of conflict, disaster and humanitarian crisis. Lindberg, who is an American agriculture official, will take over as the WFP executive director following the departure of Cindy McCain, who held that post between April 2023 and May 2026. He takes up the office at a time when the WFP is faced with serious budgetary constraints despite millions of people being food insecure across the world.

Who Is Luke Lindberg?

Luke J. Lindberg is a 37-year-old US citizen and current Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Prior to his appointment with USDA in 2025, Lindberg established South Dakota Trade, a public-private entity designed to increase export opportunities in international markets by exporters from the state.

Lindberg held positions of Chief of Staff and Chief Strategy Officer at the US Export-Import Bank. Lindberg has also been associated with Sanford Health and Sanford World Clinic, with responsibilities for global health operations in seven countries.

Luke Lindberg earned an BA, Master of Public Policy and MBA degree from the University of Maryland.

Why Was Lindberg Named Head of WFP?

The decision followed consultations between the leaders of the UN and the Executive Board of WFP. The board stated that it had approved of Lindberg’s appointment.

The Executive Director of WFP is named by both the UN Secretary-General and the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The duties of the Executive Director include overseeing the activities and programs of the WFP.

Lindberg was nominated for the job by the US President Donald Trump.

Funding Concerns Plague the WFP

Lindberg steps into an important period for the world’s largest humanitarian aid organisation dedicated to hunger problems.

According to WFP, there are 266 million people experiencing severe food shortages because of conflicts, harsh climate conditions and financial troubles. Over 100 million people in 83 countries are being helped by the organisation.

However, the organisation also highlights concerns about serious funding difficulties, reducing the number of people that can be reached by the organisation amid continued humanitarian problems.

The United States is known to be the largest donor to WFP; therefore, US funding becomes especially important for the organisation.

Cindy McCain – What Has Happened To Her?

Lindberg takes over from Cindy McCain who was the executive director of the WFP from April 2023 to May 2026.

She resigned citing her health status. Following her resignation, Carl Skau, deputy executive director and Chief Operating Officer at the WFP took up the position of acting executive director of the WFP. Carl will act in this position until Lindberg takes up his position.

The UN Secretary General and FAO chief have thanked McCain for her leadership in the challenging times.
