The Madhya Pradesh Cabinet has officially ratified the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill 2026, with this Madhya Pradesh became the fourth Indian state to pass a law, it also follows the states of Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam in the introduction of the aims of the UCC BIll which seeks to create uniformity in the laws relating to marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, maintenance, and cohabitation. The UCC Bill introduces many provisions that seek to provide equality and uniformity under the law while simultaneously exempting certain protected and tribal communities in a bid to harmonize principles of law with the realities of Indian diversity.

What Is the Madhya Pradesh Uniform Civil Code Bill 2026?

The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill aims to create uniform civil laws applicable to all citizens regardless of religion in all aspects of personal law. ]

This bill was unanimously approved by the Madhya Pradesh Cabinet during a special meeting held in Jadishpur, Bhopal.

The bill will now be tabled in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly during the Monsoon Session.

The bill aims at making civil laws consistent for everyone, ensuring equal rights and obligations in the two communities.

Constitutional Basis of the Uniform Civil Code

The concept of the Uniform Civil Code is given rise by the Article 44 of the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP) mentioned in the Indian Constitution.

Article 44 mentions that State gets to work to provide citizens with a uniform civil code across the territory of India.

Though the Directive Principles are not justiciable, they are expected to be used as guiding principles for governance and other policy formulation works.

The aim is to bring about equality, national integration and uniformity in civil matters while ensuring religious freedom of the people.
