Meet the Indian Students Who Won the Earth Prize 2026 with Plas-Stick Innovation

Indian teenagers Vivaan Chhawchharia, Ariana Agarwal, and Avyana Mehta won the 2926 Earth Prize as they developed the Plas-Stick, it is the biodegradable material derived from the tamarind seed powder which can effectively remove microplastics from water. Their affordable and scalable solution addresses the one of the most challenging environments challenges currently is microplastic contamination.

Indian Teenagers Become Global Winners of Earth Prize 2026

The three Indian students emerged as the Global Winners of The Earth Prize 2026 and becoming the first team from India to achieve this award. The Earth Prize is an international competition which recognizes the environmental projects which are developed by young people.

The global winners is selected through the public voting and this year nearly 23,000 people worldwide participated in to choosing the winning project from the seven regional finalists.

What Is Plas-Stick?

Plas-Stick is the unique biodegradable material which are created from tamarind seed powder and it is a readily available agricultural by product in India.

The innovation works by acting like the magnet for microplastics present in contaminated water. When the specially prepared powder is mixed into the water and tiny plastic particles bind together and form larger clumps.

These clumps separated by using the magnetic process and leaving behind the cleaner water. Compare to conventional filtration systems Plas-Stick does not require any expensive infrastructure or the harmful chemical additives.

This will make it the practical and environmentally friendly solution for those communities who are struggling with the water pollution.

Inspiration Behind the Innovation

The idea for the Plas-Stick was originated when these student visited to a rural community in India. The students had observed a child who was drinking water from stored shared plastic container without any filtration.

This experience made them think about the hidden dangers of microplastic contamination and particularly in those communities where access to advanced water purification systems is limited.

Realizing that millions of people around the India and World unknowingly consuming microplastics through everyday drinking water and they decided to develop an affordable and accessible solution by using the locally available resources.

Affordable and Scalable Solution for Communities

One of the most important advantages of the Plas-Stick is its affordability and scalability. Tamarind seeds are widely available across the India and it are often discarded as the agricultural waste.

By converting this waste material into the water purification solution this project combines the environmental protection with resource efficiency.

The low cost nature of the technology makes it particularly suitable for the rural and underserved communities where access to the advanced filtration systems may be limited.

Significance of The Earth Prize

The Earth Prize is the global environmental competition that encourages the students and young innovators to develop the practical solutions to environmental challenges.

The competition also aims to empower young people to take action on issues such as the climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and sustainable development.

By winning this award it provides international recognition, mentorship opportunities and support for the scaling promising environmental innovations.
