Ministry of Minority Affairs launched a dedicated module on the UMEED Portal to support widows, divorced women, and orphans from minority communities. The module enables eligible individuals to apply online for maintenance support drawn from Waqf-alal-aulad properties. This initiative is part of the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) Rules, 2025, and aims to ensure timely and transparent delivery of financial assistance to vulnerable beneficiaries.
A Digital Shift in Waqf Welfare
The newly launched module represents a major step in digitising Waqf governance. It leverages Aadhaar-based authentication for beneficiary verification and facilitates a fully online process of application, verification, approval, and disbursement.
Key Features
- Online application via UMEED portal
- Aadhaar-based verification for authenticity
- Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to bank accounts
- Implementation through State and UT Waqf Boards
This digital module aims to eliminate delays, manual intervention, and administrative hurdles, making the Waqf support system more transparent, efficient, and citizen-centric.
Focus on Social Justice and Inclusion
By specifically targeting widows, divorced women, and orphans, the government is reinforcing its commitment to inclusive development and social equity, especially within minority communities. These groups often face economic insecurity and social exclusion. The initiative ensures that the Waqf ecosystem—historically designed to aid community welfare—serves its original purpose effectively in today’s digital age.
Role of Waqf Boards and Mutawallis
The Ministry has called upon State and Union Territory Waqf Boards, along with Mutawallis (custodians of Waqf properties), to,
- Implement the new module widely
- Raise awareness among eligible beneficiaries
- Ensure swift processing and disbursement of support funds
Their role is crucial in ensuring that the benefits reach the grassroots and are not limited by local administrative inefficiencies.
