The Union Minister Shri Rajeev Ranjan Singh unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at transforming India’s fisheries sector. A key highlight was the launch of the National Fisheries Development Program (NFDP) portal, which will provide digital identities to fisheries industry workers and enterprises across the value chain. This initiative is under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY), a sub-scheme of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), enabling fish workers to access benefits like institutional credit, performance grants, and aquaculture insurance.
Climate Resilient Coastal Fishermen Villages (CRCFVs)
The Minister also announced the development of 100 coastal villages into Climate Resilient Coastal Fishermen Villages (CRCFVs) with a Rs. 200 crore budget. This initiative will focus on sustainable fishing practices, infrastructure improvements, and climate-smart livelihoods to safeguard fishing communities against environmental changes.
Drone Technology and Fisheries Innovation
A pilot project using drone technology for fish transportation was launched, spearheaded by the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI). The initiative aims to explore drones’ potential for managing and monitoring inland fisheries, improving efficiency and sustainability.
Centre of Excellence for Seaweed Farming
The establishment of the Mandapam Regional Centre of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) as a Centre of Excellence for seaweed farming was also announced. This centre will focus on innovation in seaweed cultivation, including refining farming techniques and creating a seed bank to promote sustainable practices.
Nucleus Breeding Centres and Incubation Centres
Nucleus Breeding Centres (NBCs) for both marine and freshwater species were announced, aiming to enhance seed quality through genetic improvements. Three incubation centres for fisheries start-ups, cooperatives, and FPOs were also notified, with locations in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Kochi.
Conservation of Indigenous Species
The Union Minister released booklets on the promotion of indigenous species and state fish conservation, with 22 States/UTs having declared their state fish. The initiative encourages the protection and promotion of local species.
Infrastructure Development in Fisheries
Projects worth Rs. 721.63 crore were announced, including the development of five Integrated Aqua Parks, world-class fish markets, smart fishing harbors, and the promotion of aquaculture across various states.
Vessel Communication and Support System
A Vessel Communication & Support System, launched by the Prime Minister on August 30, 2024, in Maharashtra, was highlighted as a major milestone. The installation of 1 lakh transponders on fishing vessels will enhance safety by providing real-time communication and alerts during emergencies.
Commitment to “Viksit Bharat 2047”
The event emphasized the transformative impact of PMMSY and the government’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat 2047,” ensuring sustainable growth and enhancing livelihood opportunities for over 3 crore fisheries stakeholders.
