Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh has commissioned Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Sachet and two interceptor boats (IBs) C-450 and C-451 in Goa via video conference. This is the first time in the annals of Indian maritime history that a coast guard ship was commissioned through the digital medium, maintaining the strict protocol of social distancing in the backdrop of pandemic COVID-19.

About Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Sachet:

The ICGS Sachet, the first in the series of five offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) has been designed & built indigenously by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) and is fitted with state-of-the-art navigation and communication equipment. The 105-metre longship ‘Sachet’ displaces approximately 2,350 tons and is propelled by two 9,100 KW diesel engines designed to attain a maximum speed of 26 knots, with an endurance of 6,000 nautical miles.

About Interceptor boats (IBs) C-450 and C-451:

The IBs C-450 and C-451 are indigenously designed & built by Larsen & Toubro Shipyard Hazira, and fitted with latest navigation and communication equipment. The two 30 metre longboats are capable of achieving speeds in excess of 45 knots and designed for the high-speed interception, close coast patrol and low-intensity maritime operations.

Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Harsh Vardhan dedicated the “COBAS 6800”, COVID-19 testing machine to the nation. The COBAS 6800 is the first such testing machine procured by the Government for testing COVID-19 cases and has been installed at the National Centre for Disease Control in Delhi.

About “COBAS 6800” testing machine: 

The COBAS 6800 is a fully automated, high-end machine for performing RT-PCR tests for COVID-19. The machine will provide high-volume, and quality testing and will be able to test around 1200 samples in 24 hours.

This will help to increase the testing capacity in the country. The COBAS 6800 is a sophisticated machine enabled with robotics. This machine will help minimize the chance of contamination and the risk of contraction of the virus by healthcare professionals as the machine is operated remotely, with very little human intervention.

The machine has been placed at the NCDC because it requires a minimum BSL2+ containment level for testing, and cannot be placed at just any facility. COBAS 6800 can also reportedly detect other pathogens like Viral Hepatitis B and C, HIV, Mtb, Papilloma, CMV, Chlamadiya, Neiserreia, etc.

A virtual conference of Foreign Ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation member countries was held to deliberate on cooperation to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. The Foreign Ministers of the member countries of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation participated in the video conference. In the video conference, India was represented by the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
