Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Zubin Irani inaugurated the “National Conference on Women in Police and CAPFs (Central Armed Police Forces)” in New Delhi. The Conference was organized by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR & D). Smriti Irani also released a hand-out- ‘BPR & D Mirror- Gender Bender’ and also the book titled “To Greater Heights”. The Minister stressed the importance of the women to be trained many as forensic and cybercrime investigators because women are victimised more in cybercrimes.

The main objective of the National Conference was to discuss and deliberate on the following 2 (two) themes:

  • Cyber Stalking and Bullying of Women: Steps for Protection.
  • Challenges faced by CAPF Women in Operational Areas.

Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D)

The Government of India established the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), under the Ministry of Home Affairs in the 1970s. It replaced the Police Research and Advisory Council (1966), with the primary objective of modernization of police force. The Government of India further decided to create a National Police Mission under the administrative control of BPR&D to transform the police forces in the country. Recently, BPR&D observed its 50th foundation day.

Odisha to open department for SHGs called “Mission Shakti”

Odisha will be the first state to have an exclusive department for Self Help Group (SHGs) called “Mission Shakti”. It is created for the development of women & is dedicated to all the women of Odisha. The Mission Shakti and Mamata Scheme combinedly benefit 70 lakh, women in the state. 50% reservation in Panchayati Raj has created a new era for the socio-economic development of women.

Andhra Pradesh ranks 1st in overall implementation of Poshan Abhiyan

According to the report of NITI Aayog, “Transforming Nutrition in India: POSHAN Abhiyaan”. Andhra Pradesh ranked 1st in the country for the overall implementation of POSHAN ( Prime Minister’s Overreaching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment) Abhiyaan. The 2nd anniversary of POSHAN Abhiyaan is recognized by celebrating Poshan Pakhwada from 8th-22nd March 2020. Tamil Nadu tops the list of the states in terms of the number of participants in the programme.

The Andhra Pradesh State Government has given smartphones to all 55,607 Anganwadi workers to improve service delivery and for reporting day to day actions, as well as to council the targeted beneficiaries through video embedded in the application.

What is Poshan Abhiyan?

Government of India is implementing Poshan Abhiyan earlier known as National Nutrition Mission, since 18th December 2017 to address the problem of malnutrition in the country. The Abhiyan aims to reduce malnutrition in the country in a phased manner, through a life cycle approach, by adopting a synergized and result oriented approach. The goals of Poshan Abhiyan are to achieve improvement in the nutritional status of children from 0-6 years, adolescent girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers in a time-bound manner.

V Praveen Rao wins MS Swaminathan Award

Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor V Praveen Rao has won the 7th Dr MS Swaminathan Award for the period 2017-2019. The Selection Committee has decided to select Praveen Rao for the award recognising his contributions in the fields of agricultural research, teaching, extension and administration. The award will be conferred on him in June 2020. Praveen Rao handled 13 research & 6 consultancy projects on micro-irrigation in India, Israel and South Africa.

The MS Swaminathan award was constituted by Retired ICAR Employees Association (RICAREA) and Nuziveedu Seeds Limited (NSL). It carries a prize of ₹2 lakh and a citation.

Gujarat ranks 1st in domestic solar rooftop installations

Gujarat ranks first in the list for domestic solar rooftop installations with 64% of domestic solar installations. Nearly 50,915 systems being fixed on domestic rooftops in the State as on March 2, 2020. The State government of Gujarat has adopted a solar rooftop scheme “Surya Gujarat” to cover about eight lakh domestic electricity consumers under the scheme by 2022. Maharashtra ranks second in the list with 5,513 installations as on the same date. About 79,950 systems have been installed throughout the country has a capacity of 322 MW.

The government of Gujarat had also relaxed subsidy criteria for domestic users with up to 40% subsidy on the cost of projects up to 3 kWh capacity, while 20% subsidy assistance is being provided for project with a capacity between 3 and 10 kWh.

University of Ranchi launches its own Community Radio Station

University of Ranchi launched its own Community Radio Station RADIO KHANCHI 90.4 FM Aap Sabka Radio on the occassion of International Women’s Day. The radio would provide help to university students which is spread over a campus of more than 15 kms. Students will be able to receive information about academic, cultural, examination, important datelines and placement related activities and programs.

Radio Khanchi under Ranchi University remains to be the first-ever University in the Eastern Zone to be gifted with a Community Radio Station by Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and sponsored by Information and Public Relations Department, Government of Jharkhand.

Radio Khanchi has prepared its own signature tune and the Vice-chancellor of Ranchi University Dr Ramesh Kumar Pandey has requested for technical assistance of their Community Radio station from All India Radio. Ranchi University for an initial span of two years to manage the technical functioning of the radio station.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. He made his Test and ODI debut for India against South Africa in 2006. Internationally, He played 31 Tests, scoring 1,944 runs at an average of 34.11.

Wasim Jaffer made his first-class debut in 1996-97. He played for Mumbai and also represented Vidarbha. He became the first player in Indian cricket to feature in 150 Ranji matches. He is also the highest run-scorer in the history of Ranji Trophy. Jaffer played 260 first-class games, amassing 19,410 runs at a staggering average of 50.67. In his first-class career, Jaffer scored 57 hundreds and 91 fifties with 314 being his highest score.

Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has stated that Sanitary napkin makers will be asked to supply a biodegradable bag with each napkin from January 2021. The possibility of getting infected because of handling used Sanitary Napkins thrown in the garbage was brought to notice by many of the women garbage collectors. That’s why Environment Ministry has taken the decision to ask Makers of Sanitary Napkins to provide biodegradable bags so that Napkins can be wrapped in these bags before being thrown in the garbage.

Javadekar announced that the sanitation norms for Corporations and municipalities will now be applied to villages with a population of more than three thousand.

NASA named Mars 2020 rover as Perseverance

 

NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) announced the name of the 5th Mars (red planet) rover as Perseverance. Previously the rover was known by its codename as Mars 2020.

The name was suggested by Alexander Mather, 7th standard student and was announced by Nasa’s director of science, Thomas Zurbuchen at an event in Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Virginia. Nasa’s naming competition asked children to submit their favoured name for the Mars 2020 rover began in August 2019, comprises 4,700 voluntary judges including teachers and space enthusiasts shortlisted nine names and was asked by the public to vote & select the word through online.

Perseverance: The rover has improved wheel design which is used to collect the samples from the martian rocks and helps scientists to determine about the ancient microbial life that existed in red planet. The Perseverance rover will be the 5th exploratory vehicle after Sojourner, Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity.

India plans to launch Chandrayaan-3 by first half of 2021

 

According to the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Jitendra Singh, a possible schedule for the launch of Chandrayaan-3 is planned to be implemented in the first half of 2021. The preparation of Chandrayaan-3 has been done by taking lessons from the previously launched Chandrayaan-2, a Moon mission which was launched in 2019, in which the Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO)’s Vikram Lander lost contact following a hard landing on the Moon’s surface.

Chandrayaan-3 will be designed to increase design, capacity with a cost of around Rs 610 crore, including Rs 360 crore for the launch rocket. ISRO also decided to launch in the same area where Chandrayaan-2 launched, and would have a lander, rover and propulsion module like its predecessor.

Jitendra Singh also mentioned India’s manned space mission Gaganyaan project,where 4 biological and 2 physical science experiments related to microgravity have been done.
