Piyush Pandey was often called the “Father of Indian Advertising.” He joined Ogilvy India in 1982 at the age of 27, after trying his hand at cricket, tea tasting, and construction. Over more than four decades, he transformed Ogilvy into one of the most awarded advertising agencies in the world.
Pandey’s genius lay in understanding the emotions and behaviour of Indian consumers. He broke away from English-dominated, Western-style campaigns and introduced Indian languages, humour, and warmth into mainstream advertising. His ads didn’t just sell products—they told stories that connected deeply with people.
Iconic Campaigns That Defined an Era
Under his leadership, Ogilvy created some of the most memorable campaigns in Indian advertising history.
- Fevicol – “The Ultimate Adhesive”: A humorous yet insightful series of ads that became household favourites.
- Cadbury Dairy Milk – “Kuch Khaas Hai”: A celebration of innocence and joy that remains iconic to this day.
- Asian Paints – “Har Khushi Mein Rang Laaye”: Ads that beautifully blended emotion and tradition.
- Hutch – “You & I” (featuring the pug): A campaign that became a cultural symbol of connection.
Beyond brand campaigns, Pandey also helped shape India’s political communication, crafting the slogan “Ab ki baar, Modi sarkar”, one of the most recognisable political slogans in recent history.
Honours and Global Recognition
Piyush Pandey received several honours for his remarkable contributions to advertising.
- Padma Shri – India’s fourth-highest civilian award, recognising his creative excellence.
- Lion of St Mark Award at Cannes Lions (2018) – shared with his brother Prasoon Pandey, making them the first Asians to receive this lifetime achievement honour.
These accolades reflected not only his creative genius but also his leadership in bringing Indian storytelling to the global stage.
A Personal and Professional Legacy
Born in Jaipur, Piyush Pandey grew up in a family deeply connected to the arts. His sister, Ila Arun, is a noted singer and actor, while his brother Prasoon Pandey is a renowned ad film director. Pandey himself lent his voice to early radio jingles before joining the advertising world.
Even after stepping down as Executive Chairman of Ogilvy India in 2023, he continued to serve as a mentor and advisor. His philosophy of keeping advertising “simple, human, and honest” continues to influence young creatives across India.
