PM Modi Commissions INS Agray, INS Dunagiri and INS Sanshodhak

Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commissioned the three indigenously designed and built naval ships such as INS Agray, INS Dunagiri and INS Sanshodhak at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata in West Bengal on 21st June, 2026. It is designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and it is constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata and this three ships will showcases the India’s growing expertise in the naval engineering, indigenous manufacturing and defense innovation.

What Happened in Kolkata?

Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally inducted the three advanced naval vessels into the Indian Navy and they are,

• INS Dunagiri – It is an advanced stealth frigate
• INS Sanshodhak – It is the large hydrographic survey vessel
• INS Agray – An anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft

The ceremony was held at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata and it coincided with two globally significant observances of the day, the International Day of Yoga and World Hydrography Day.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the significance of to commissioning the INS Sanshodhak on World Hydrography Day and calling it as a remarkable coincidence that India’s most advanced hydrographic survey vessel entered into the service on the same day.

INS Dunagiri: Advanced Stealth Frigate

INS Dunagiri is the next-generation stealth frigate designed to enhance the Indian Navy’s combat capabilities.

It is equipped with the advanced weapons, sensors and stealth technology and this warship is designed to operate effectively in the complex maritime environments.

The vessel strengthens the India’s ability to protect the its maritime interests while improving the operational readiness in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

INS Agray: Anti-Submarine Warfare Specialist

INS Agray has been specifically developed for the anti-submarine warfare operations in shallow waters.

As underwater threats are continues to evolve, vessels like INS Agray plays the crucial role in detecting, tracking and neutralizing the hostile submarines.

Over 200 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have contributed to their construction.

The Prime Minister also noted that the India aims to move beyond being as a major importer of the defense equipment and become the global defense manufacturing hub.

Indigenous defense production, which stood at around the ₹40,000 crore in 2014 has reportedly increased the nearly ₹1.8 lakh crore.
