PM Modi Opens Z-Morh Tunnel in J&K

On January 13, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z-Morh Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir, marking a significant milestone in improving all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and the strategic region of Ladakh.

Strategic Importance and Specifications

The 6.5-kilometer-long, bi-directional Z-Morh Tunnel is situated at an altitude of approximately 8,652 feet on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. It connects Gagangir and the popular tourist destination of Sonamarg, bypassing avalanche-prone areas and reducing travel time from over two hours to just 15 minutes. Initiated in 2015 under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the project was completed at a cost of ₹2,400 crore.

Economic and Tourism Impact

The tunnel is expected to transform Sonamarg into a year-round tourist destination, promoting winter sports and boosting the local economy. Residents, who previously had to relocate during winters due to isolation, will now benefit from uninterrupted connectivity, enhancing access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities.

Enhanced Security Measures

In anticipation of the inauguration, a comprehensive security arrangement was implemented. The Special Protection Group (SPG), along with Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Army, and paramilitary forces, established a 20-kilometer security perimeter around the venue, employing drone surveillance, checkpoints, and random frisking to ensure safety.

Future Connectivity Projects

The Z-Morh Tunnel is part of a broader initiative to enhance infrastructure in the Himalayan region. It complements the under-construction 14-kilometer-long Zoji La Tunnel, which is expected to be completed by 2028. Once operational, these tunnels will provide seamless connectivity along National Highway 1 (NH-1) between Srinagar Valley and Ladakh, reducing travel distance and time, and facilitating economic development and defense logistics.
