Renowned Indian actress Sowcar Janaki breathed her last at the age of 94 on August 21, 2026, after being admitted to the hospital for a short period of time in Chennai, as stated by the press release issued by the president of Nadigar Sangam, Nassar. The legendary actress was admitted to Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet due to poor health conditions in old age and was under intensive treatment. With the death of Sowcar Janaki, a glorious career that lasted for more than seven decades has ended, in which she made her presence felt in different South Indian film industries.
Sowcar Janaki Passes Away After Short Hospital Stay
The president of Nadigar Sangam Nassar announced that the veteran actress died at 1:59 PM on August 21. The body of the deceased actress was planned to be laid at Centoph Road in Teynampet, Chennai.
It was earlier told to the public by actor Kayal Devaraj that the actress was admitted to the hospital. Some members of the South Indian Artistes’ Association, famously known as Nadigar Sangam, like Nassar visited her in the hospital during her treatment period.
A Career in Four Linguistic Film Industries
Also known as Sankaramanchi Janaki, the actress was born in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, where she started her career at All India Radio in Madras as a radio artist.
Her first film appearance was in Shavukaru in 1950. This Telugu film, which was directed by L.V. Prasad, introduced the actress to the audience and eventually gave rise to her screen name, Sowcar Janaki.
Sowcar Janaki made her Tamil film debut in 1952 in the movie called Valayapathi. After that, she appeared in movies in various languages including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. She became one of the few actresses who worked in different languages during her career.
Important Stages of Sowcar Janaki’s Career
Among other collaborations, Sowcar Janaki also starred in the film Mahishasura Mardini with Dr Rajkumar in it. Apart from working in films, she took part in television productions as well, including Tamil Doordarshan program, Oorarinda Rahasyam.
Even later in life, Sowcar Janaki continued working in cinema industry. Some of her later works include the 2023 Telugu film Anni Manchi Sakunamule and the 2020 Tamil film Biskoth.
In 2022, she was awarded Padma Shri, which recognized her considerable contribution to Indian cinema.
