US-based global coffee chain Starbucks has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to establish its first Global Capability Centre (GCC) in India. The new technology hub will be located in Chennai and is expected to create around 800 high-value technology jobs in its first phase.
The development marks an important expansion of Starbucks’ presence in India beyond its consumer-facing coffeehouse business and further strengthens Chennai’s position as a major destination for global capability centres.
Starbucks Signs MoU with Tamil Nadu Government
The MoU was signed between Starbucks Coffee and Guidance Tamil Nadu, the state government’s investment promotion agency under the Industries Department.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Starbucks plans to build the Chennai facility as a technology and global capability hub supporting the company’s wider international operations.

Why Did Starbucks Choose Chennai?
According to Starbucks Coffee Chief Technology Officer Anand Varadarajan, India is an important market for the company. Several factors contributed to Starbucks choosing Chennai for its first Indian GCC.
These include Chennai’s large pool of skilled technology professionals, relatively low employee attrition, strong infrastructure and incentives offered by the Tamil Nadu government. The company expects these advantages to support the development of new solutions and expansion of its global capabilities.
What Will the Chennai GCC Do?
A Global Capability Centre is an offshore facility established by a multinational company to perform specialised functions for its global operations.
Starbucks’ Chennai GCC is expected to support its global business through technology and other high-value functions. Reports indicate that its capabilities could include areas such as software development, finance, product development and research, reflecting the broader shift of GCCs in India from traditional back-office centres to innovation and technology hubs.
The centre will work independently of Starbucks’ retail operations in India.
Separate from Starbucks-Tata Consumer Joint Venture
An important point is that the new GCC will not be part of Starbucks’ existing retail joint venture with Tata Consumer Products.
Starbucks operates its coffeehouse business in India through its partnership with Tata Consumer Products, while the Chennai GCC will function separately as part of Starbucks’ global capability and technology operations.
Chennai’s Growing GCC Ecosystem
The Starbucks announcement further adds to Chennai’s growing importance in India’s GCC landscape. Global companies increasingly use such centres for advanced functions including technology, finance, software development, research and development, and business operations.
Tamil Nadu has also announced initiatives to expand Chennai’s GCC ecosystem, including dedicated GCC corridors aimed at supporting large-scale global capability operations.
Starbucks joins several global companies expanding their capability-centre presence in Chennai, highlighting the city’s skilled workforce and technology ecosystem.
What Is a Global Capability Centre (GCC)?
A Global Capability Centre (GCC) is an offshore or specialised operational centre established by a multinational company to support its global business.
Modern GCCs typically handle functions such as:
- Information technology and software development
- Data and analytics
- Finance and accounting
- Research and development
- Product development
- Digital transformation
- Business and operational support
India has emerged as a major global destination for such centres because of its large skilled workforce and established technology ecosystem.
Why Is This Important?
Starbucks’ decision to establish its first Indian GCC in Chennai is significant because it expands the company’s engagement with India beyond its retail coffee business.
The project is expected to generate around 800 technology jobs in its first phase, while also reinforcing Chennai and Tamil Nadu’s position as destinations for high-value global technology and capability investments.
