T. N. Manoharan, IDBI Chairman and Padma Shri Awardee, Passes Away

India mourns the loss of T. N. Manoharan, the Chairman of IDBI Bank and a renowned Chartered Accountant, who passed away on July 30, 2025. A Padma Shri awardee and former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), Manoharan leaves behind a remarkable legacy in banking, finance, and corporate governance.

A Distinguished Career in Finance and Banking

T. N. Manoharan’s illustrious career spanned several decades, during which he made invaluable contributions to India’s financial sector. He served as the non-executive Chairman of Canara Bank from 2015 to 2020 and later took charge as the Chairman of IDBI Bank, steering key reforms and strengthening governance.

He also worked as an Independent Director at Mahindra & Mahindra and Tech Mahindra, where his expertise guided the companies in crucial decision-making.

The Satyam Revival and National Recognition

One of the most significant milestones in Manoharan’s career was his role in the revival of Satyam Computers Services Ltd. after its corporate scandal in 2009. Appointed as a Special Director by the Government of India, he was part of the team that restored investor and public confidence.

For this extraordinary contribution, he was honoured with the Business Leadership Award and the title of Indian of the Year 2009. Later, in recognition of his service to the nation, he was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri Award.

Contributions to Financial Governance

Earlier in his career, Manoharan also served as a Director in Sahara India Finance Corporation at the instance of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to safeguard depositors’ interests during its winding-up process. His expertise extended across accountancy, economics, banking, rural economy, law, risk management, and corporate governance.

Academic Achievements

Manoharan was not only a finance leader but also a scholar. He earned his Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Madras and completed his Master’s degree in Commerce from Sri Venkateshwara University, Andhra Pradesh. He further pursued law at Madras Law College, University of Madras, and became a Fellow Chartered Accountant of ICAI.
