Two-Day Human Rights Training Programme Concluded Successfully

The University of Manipur, in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), successfully hosted a two-day ‘Training Programme on Human Rights in India’ on 30th August 2024 at the Court Hall, Manipur University. The event saw participation from over 100 legal experts, academicians, human rights defenders, and students.

Valedictory Address by Shri Bharat Lal

Shri Bharat Lal, Secretary General of the NHRC, delivered the valedictory address, emphasizing the significance of the Preamble, Fundamental Rights, and Directive Principles of State Policy. He highlighted the role of Article 32 in securing justice and underscored the government’s responsibility in upholding civil, political, cultural, and socio-economic rights. Shri Lal urged that human rights must be an internal commitment rather than an externally imposed duty, stressing that violence is a violation of human rights and that fostering fraternity and peace is essential for societal progress.

NHRC’s Recent Initiatives

Shri Lal also pointed out the NHRC’s recent camp sitting in Guwahati, where 25 cases of alleged human rights violations in Manipur were addressed. He reaffirmed NHRC’s commitment to protecting and promoting human rights, calling for a collective effort to integrate respect for human rights into daily life.

Prof. Rameshchandra Borpatragohain: Overview of Human Rights principles and practices.

Dr. N. Pramod Singh: Role of Human Rights institutions in India.

Hon’ble Justice Kh. Nobin Singh: Intersection of Human Rights and the Criminal Justice System.

Shri Keisham Pradipkumar: Child rights challenges in Manipur.

Mrs. Sobita Mangsatabam: Role of NGOs in gender justice.

Mr. Meihoubam Rakesh: Constitutional safeguards on arrest and detention.

Mr. Rinku Khumukcham: Role of media in promoting and protecting human rights.

Commitment to Human Rights Education

The event marked a significant step in advancing human rights education and advocacy in the North-East. The NHRC continues to partner with central and state governments, academic institutions, NGOs, and human rights defenders to uphold and promote human rights, treating every individual with respect and dignity.
